The COVID Diaries: This is What I Did Today

At the beginning of April my niece, Jaycie, asked us to participate in the 30-Day Song Challenge on Instagram. For posterity, I am documenting the songs I chose here.

This is what I did today. All day. I’m not the least bit ashamed, it was kind of fun for me digging through old songs and old posts on I Will Dare. Not too shabby for day 92m174=-19 of quarantine in this, the Year of Dairy Products from the American Heartland.

I also made a playlist!

DAY 01 – A song you like with a color in the title
DAY 02 – A song you like with a number in the title
I cheated on the first two so I could catch up. Sixteen Blue by The Replacements
DAY 03 – A song that reminds you of summertime – Who’s Johnny by El Debarge
DAY 04 – A song that reminds you of someone you’d rather forgetThirteen by Big Star
DAY 05 – A song that needs to be played loud – Turn Up the Radio by Autograph
DAY 06 – A song that makes you want to dance – I Wanna Dance with Somebody by Whitney Houston
DAY 07 – A song to drive to – If I Can’t Change Your Mind by Sugar
DAY 08 – A song about drugs or alcohol – Beer for Breakfast by The Replacements
DAY 09 – A song that makes you happy – I Will Dare by The Replacements
DAY 10 – A song that makes you sad – To Destruction by Dolorean
DAY 11 – A song you never get tired of – Portions for Foxes by Rilo Kiley
DAY 12 – A song from your preteen years – Take it on the Run by REO Speedwagon
I am disappointed whenever I’m reminded this song is not called “Heard it from a Friend.” This was one of the songs I got from my very glamorous and older cousin/babysitter Laurie
DAY 13 – A song you like from the 70s – Cherry Bomb by The Runaways
DAY 14 – A song you’d love be played at your wedding – Wide Open Spaces by Dixie Chicks yes, I realize that post is about “Cowboy Take Me Away” but whatever. Same diff.
DAY 15 – A song you like that’s a cover by another artist – Sorry by Lydia Loveless
DAY 16 – A song that’s a classic favorite – Dead Flowers by The Rolling Stones
DAY 17 – A song you’d sing a duet with someone on karaoke – Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around by Stevie Nicks & Tom Petty This has nothing to do with anything, but my 21-year-old nephew worships Stevie Nicks and it tickles me to no end.
DAY 18 – A song from the year you were born – Brandy (You’re a Fine Girl) by Looking Glass
DAY 19 – A song that makes you think about life – The Emperor’s New Clothes by Sinead O’Connor If I ever get a lyric tattoo it will be these lines:
Whatever it may bring
I will live by my own policies
I will sleep with a clear conscience
I will sleep in peace

DAY 20 – A song that has many meanings to you – Supernova by Liz Phair
DAY 21 – A song you like with a person’s name in the title – Valerie Loves Me by Material Issue
DAY 22 – A song that moves you forward – Bad Reputation by Joan Jett & The Blackhearts
DAY 23 – A song you think everybody should listen to – Alabama Pines by Jason Isbell
DAY 24 – A song by a band you wish were still together – True Dreams of Wichita by Soul Coughing
DAY 25 – A song you like by an artist no longer living – Linger by The Cranberries
DAY 26 – A song that makes you want to fall in love – Cover Me Up by Jason Isbell
DAY 27 – A song that breaks your heart – Nightswimming by R.E.M. I’m developing a crackpot theory that all white GenX women have at least three R.E.M. songs that remind them of distinct people or events in their lives.
DAY 28 – A song by artist whose voice you love – Young Turks by Rod Stewart
DAY 29 – A song you remember from your childhood – It’s Still Rock & Roll to Me by Billy Joel
DAY 30 – A song that reminds you of yourself – Perfect World by Liz Phair Back when I used to try to fool men into dating me I’d use lyrics from this song as the headline for my dating profile. “I want to be cool, tall, vulnerable, and luscious.”
