Today, after I started chanting Allen Ginsberg’s “America” in my head I decided to put me out of my misery and just listen to it already. It was while thumbing through the songs that I realized I have a lot of American music. To wit:
- America, Self
- America, Simon & Garfunkel
- America (Closing Time) Tom Waits & Allen Ginsberg
- America the Beautiful, Frank Sinatra
- America the Beautiful, Neil Young
- American Car, Mike Doughty
- American Dream, Lucinda Williams
- American Dreaming, Dead Can Dance
- American Gigolo, Weezer
- American Girl, Soul Coughing & Weezer
- American Girl, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
- American Girl, Of Montreal (a cover of the Tom Petty song)
- American Girls, Counting Crows
- American Music, The Hold Steady
- American Music, Violent Femmes
- America Pie, Don McLean
I was surprised to discover that I don’t have Neil Diamond’s “America.” Wonders never cease.

You need to get Robyn Hitchcock’s “America” as well.
Happy Old Year’s Day. (I’m trying to get December 31st into a full day off as well, and it starts with the getting that name to catch on.)
