‘Mats live at the 7th Street Entry circa 1981’s Twin Tone Showcase

One of the greatest tragedies of my life is that I never got to see The Replacements play live. Not ever. I came entirely too late to the party, not even discovering their genius until a few years after they had broken up.

But thanks to my friend EM and the magic of You Tube, I got to watch a ‘Mats concert from the 7th Street Entry circa 1981. It was some sort of TwinTone showcase. If I could have found a setlist, I’d have put them in chronological order. But you know, this is a helluva lot better than nothing. And until today, nothing was what I had.

Takin’ A Ride, Staples in Her Stomach, and Careless
Kick Your Door Down
I’m in Trouble and Don’t Ask Why
Customer and Rattlesnake
Dope Smokin’ Moron and some song I don’t know
Dead and Shut Up
I Hate Music and Stuck in the Middle
Goddamn Job and Junior’s Got a Gun

Watching the videos is nothing short of awesome. They all look so young and dorky. Tommy looks like he’s skipping Algebra to play the Entry, Mars is concentrating so hard he can’t seem to even look up from his drums, and Bob’s alive. God, I love the Internet!
