Day 186 of 200: Oracle of the Maritimes (SotW)

I’ve been known to say that Neko Case is to my 40s what Lucinda Williams was to my 30s what Liz Phair was to my 20s what Suzanne Vega was to my teens. And by known to say, I mean it’s something I think a lot about in my head and probably don’t give voice to as often as I should.

If I were to rewrite Neko Case’s Greatest Hits (according to me), “Oracle of the Maritimes” would make the list. I’m not sure what it would knock off, and it’s too late for me to think about it too hard.

They lyrics of this song are amazing, about a woman struggling with her femininity or lack there of, and it strikes right at the heart of me. Plus theres’ this, “And I’m too much for people, so again, shed my thoughts here from a distance.”

And most of all, there’s the line about finding an ocean that goes with your eyes, which is lovely on its own but when sung by Neko it will worm its way into your brain and you find yourself singing the line throughout the day. And the next day. And the one after that.
