Since the 200 Project is going swimmingly, I’m starting a new project to keep the momentum going through 2019. This new project is Song of the Week and will feature whatever song I can’t seem to get off my mind and the things I want to say about it.
This week’s song is “Juice” by Lizzo.
I listen to this song about six times in a row every morning. It makes me ridiculously happy, which surprises me. I generally hate the “get it, girl” bullshit that passes as some sort of feminist empowerment these days. It makes me roll my eyes and make barf faces.
However, when these kinds of sentiments come from Lizzo I cannot get enough. Because she’s a young, fat, black women who lives in the white supremacist states of trashmerica, her self-acceptance is actually radical and empowering. On top of that her writing is smart, and the song is full of catchy one-liners I want to gobble up like Cheez-its. For instance:
- No, I’m not a snack at all, baby I’m the whole damn meal.
- Mirror, mirror on the wall don’t say it because I know I’m cute.
- Heard you say I’m not the baddest bitch, you lyin’.
