Rock & Roll Sports Classic: A Thing that Happened on Our Planet

Last night before bed as I was reading Queens of Noise: The Real Story of the Runaways, I learned that there was a thing on TV called the “Rock and Roll Sports Classic.”

On this show rock and rollers competed in various sporting events: 100-meter dash, a biking thing, swimming, tug-of-war, etc. This was in The Runaways book, because The Runaways competed along with oh, Michael Jackson (and the rest of the Jacksons), Kenny Loggins, the dudes from Boston, Marilyn McCoo. It’s a cornucopia of 70s music deliciousness hosted by Ed McMahon and Alex (George Papadopolis from “Webster”) Karras and features Phyllis Diller for a reason I cannot discern.

And because we live in a magical time where nothing is ever forgotten (except for, alas, Locker Loot) there is really shitty video footage of Joan Jett, Sandy West, and Lita Ford running a race against LaToya Jackson, Anne Murray, and Marilyn McCoo. Here it is, just in case you needed your faith in the awesomeness of the universe reaffirmed.

If you go to YouTube you can watch Kenny Loggins win a swimming event and then get interviewed by Susan Anton.

OH MY GOD. That is all.

What’s really weird, and kind of makes me feel like I am becoming hopelessly old or something, is that someone totally might do a show like this with current stars, and that would be too awful to contemplate, and completely typical of our sellout media culture, et cetera, et cetera. But the vintage-era stars in vintage programming … well that’s a horse of a different color.

But the things is, if they did it today it would be washed-up, used-to-be stars or one-hit wonders ala Dancing With the Stars (which I have never seen, but know of because, well, I breathe and read the Internet). But these were popular bands at that time and that would never, ever happen today.

Indeed. But I’m still not sure Beyonce having an archery showdown with Pink would be watchable. I’m cringing even typing that. Maybe if their babies were strapped to their backs — that might be something …. Also, I guess it wouldn’t be novel today — we’ve had “A very Gaga Thanksgiving” and heard all about Xtina’s child rearing vis-a-vis “The Voice.” Maybe there was just something really special about the 1970s, besides the swimwear.

I watched the whole dang thing. My favorite part was this line: “Watch out for Leif Garrett because he’s very good at the heel and toe.” That right there is some fine sports commentary.

My least favorite part was that the choppy editor cut away from Rod Stewart warming up to do something hilarious.
