Rat-a-too-ee

Jaycie, Max, and I went to see Ratatouille this afternoon. Yes, as a matter of fact, I do only go to cartoon movies. They’re perfect for my adult-onset ADD.

As with all Pixar fare the movie is stunning. The attention those people pay to detail amazes me every time. Seriously the fur on the rats and the subtle colors in Colette’s hair is awesome, but what’s so amazing are the nicks and scratches on all the kitchen ware. Genius.

But what I loved the most was this little speech by the food critic Anton Ego:

In many ways, the work of a critic is easy. We risk very little yet enjoy a position over those who offer up their work and their selves to our judgment. We thrive on negative criticism, which is fun to write and to read. But the bitter truth we critics must face is that, in the grand scheme of things, the average piece of junk is more meaningful than our criticism designating it so.

Weighty stuff for a kids’ movie, but so utterly brilliant that it made Ego my favorite character in the movie.
