sometimes when i have the mike doughty turned up loud enough and i’m falling, falling, falling through a sea of words that pours from my fingers onto the keyboard onto the screen and the words coming out aren’t so bad and sorta make sense, sometimes when all that happens all at once and i can’t hear the office chatter and the hum of the florescent lights, then i forget where i am and when i surface again blinking i grin sorta smugly because i get paid for all this.

Isn’t that the best feeling in the world? Stephen King described it in Misery as a hole opening up in the paper and swallowing him in, and I agree. To a writer there’s nothing more satisfying than having one of those sessions where the words just flow and you can’t stop even if you want to. It’s like the conscious mind shuts down and the nervous system makes a direct connection from the unconscious mind to the fingers.
