As someone who is coming up on her 10th Blog Anniversary (July 31), I’m doing a horseshit job of blogging lately. I’ve spent a moderate amount of time feeling guilty. But then last week Justin, who runs Minn Post’s Blog Cabin sent an e-mail saying that there’s been a 30% drop in submissions since summer began. I feel much better. It’s not me, it’s the weather. Don’t you feel better now?
Anxiously awaiting July 20th
The last time we visited our favorite Canadian Hipster doofus, he was getting in deep with Ramona Flowers, she of the seven evil exes. So deep that the couple has shacked up. What? Our favorite slacker has gotten a job and a live-in girlfriend? How can this be. Alas, it is s. But no need to worry the Scott Pilgrim manages to make becoming a grown up totally awesome. Volume five opens with Scott’s birthday party where he proclaims he’s…
Raising the emotional stakes
Every time I start to write about one of the books in the Scott Pilgrim series, I thumb through the book to refresh my memory. Without fail, each page I land on brings a giant smile to my face. It’s probably my job as a “reviewer” (in quotes because I’m not sure I really review books so much as talk about them and being a book talker sounds dumb) to explain exactly what it is about these books that’s so…
I’m trying to figure out if the acting is bad on purpose
I’m not entirely sure how it happened, but here I am in the dark living room sitting in my underpants eating cherry Nibs and watching “Beach Blanket Bingo.” This might be the worst movie ever made. They just had a dude “tuning” his guitar and as he started strumming an entire band with drum section started up (though nowhere to be seen in the scene) and some brunette woman is singing about how it only hurts when she cries. I…
Two things about Independence Day
First, one of my clients sent me an email at 9:23 p.m. on July 4th. I know this because Ziggy buzzed while we were sitting on that curb in Blaine and everyone was so curious to know who in the hell was e-mailing at 9:23 on the 4th of July that I checked it. Second, there is something quite comforting and pleasant about the 4th of July tradition that finds Sister #2 and fam, Sister #4, and me schlepping up…
Scott Pilgrim is infinitely entertaining
When we last left our favorite Canadian Hipster, he was trying to clean up after a few ex-girlfriends. In Volume 3 Scott Pilgrim vs. The Infinite Sadness, Scott’s dealing with the grand poobah of exGFs, Envy Adams. Envy’s back in town toting a vegan boyfriend named Todd who also plays in her fabulously successful band, Clash at the Demonhead. She’s asked Sex Bob-omb, Scott’s band, to open for one of their shows. A lot of this volume is spent in…
