When we last left our favorite Canadian Hipster, he was trying to clean up after a few ex-girlfriends. In Volume 3 Scott Pilgrim vs. The Infinite Sadness, Scott’s dealing with the grand poobah of exGFs, Envy Adams. Envy’s back in town toting a vegan boyfriend named Todd who also plays in her fabulously successful band, Clash at the Demonhead. She’s asked Sex Bob-omb, Scott’s band, to open for one of their shows. A lot of this volume is spent in…
The Bombardier’s excellent adventure
To be frank, Off We Go Into the Wild Blue Yonder by Travis Nichols was one of those books that alternately charmed the hell out of me and annoyed the crap out of me. The story is told through a series of letters written to a Polish woman named Luddie. The letter-writer is an unnamed young man who is taking his girlfriend, Bernadette, and his grandfather, the Bombardier, on a pilgrimage to Poland in search of Luddie. She’s the woman…
The emotional landmine buried in an old book
I knew a woman once named Paige who never kept cards or letters. Never. She told me at what was probably the first ever Minnesota Women’s Blogger Meetup in the Spring of 2001. I remember being appalled at such a notion. “You just throw them away?” I’m sure I said. “Yeah,” she probably said. “I just don’t need all those reminders of the person I used to be sitting around.” All these years, what she said has stuck with me….
My review of American Psycho rescued from an old journal circa 2000
09Jan00, 6 p.m., Bowling Alley American Psycho – Bret Easton Ellis So I am sitting here reading this book. I think Mom & Dad got it for me as a Christmas gift. I asked for the book based on a newsgroup reccomendation [sic]. So far it’s totally – eh. This guy — Ellis, wastes SO much time describing what everyone is wearing and how much it costs. Blech, like I care. I can’t tell if it’s supposed to demonstrate how…
Scottaholic
Right around the time I closed the back cover on Scott Pilgrim Volume 1, I went right out and bought Volumes 2-5. I’d have bought Volume 6, but it doesn’t come out until July. I am hoping I survive that long. The withdrawal might not be pretty. These books, at least the first two, are so fun it’s like eating ice cream in the sunshine while watching your favorite band play. Or whatever it is you think is a lot…
A few things about some things, a pointless list
I’m taking an Innovative Fiction class at The Loft tomorrow. I’m mostly looking forward to it. Only mostly, because lately I’ve been Lofty McLoftloft. Class last Tuesday, Comicbook and Graphic Novel Conference last weekend*, Class Tuesday, Ben Greenman reading Wednesday*, and now Innovative Fiction. I love The Loft and all, but this is a little bit ridiculous. For reasons that are kind of mysterious Supergenius HQ has become the home of not one, not two, but FOUR iPods and one…
