Still Scary After All These Years

Hi Darling Ones, Last night I had a conversation with my friend, Em, about writing, writing habits, and routine. It was a great talk and we vowed in the new year to establish a routine and hold each other accountable. I’m excited, because I want to work on my writing and my penmanship. I’ve been woefully lax on the physical practice of writing. I’m easily frustrated with the tremor and my Floppy Scoop gets tired fast when gripping a pen….

Why That Song?

Well, well, well, Darling Ones, Today is the 40th anniversary of “Let it Be” (The Replacements’ version), which contains the song “I Will Dare,” which happens to be the greatest side one, track one of all time. ALL TIME! If I were better at seeing into the future I’d have saved a few thoughts brought on by the 28th Anniversary of The ‘Mats’ ‘Let it Be’ for a more monumental anniversary. Even twelve years into my blogging career I couldn’t…

Appreciation 9.24

Hi Darling Ones, I spent the last few days in La Piscina de K-Dizzle (what I call Sister #4’s pool), but managed to appreciate some other things this month. Kris Kristofferson I mentioned on Bluesky that there were a billion reasons to adore Kris Kristofferson, then I linked to “Sister Sinead”. Shocking, when “Jody and the Kid” was right there. Sinead trumps stupidly-spelled, male-narrator Jody songs. When I think of Kris Kristofferson I didn’t think Highwaymen or Bobby McGee, I…

Better Down Where it’s Wetter

Dear Darling Ones, This is a letter to tell you I’m a mermaid now. It’s not the best timing. Last week, a young woman who loved Stevie Nicks and boygenius lopped off six inches of my hair. I meant to write about taking my walker and stroke-addled body out into a public space that wasn’t a medical facility for the first time in 563 days, but I was very busy shoving every episode of “Facts of Life” into my eyes….

Can I Divorce My Self-Worth from Capitalism?

Hi Darling Ones, I recently read Rest Is Resistance: A Manifesto by Tricia Hersey, a book I liked a lot more in theory than in practice. Hersey’s ideas around how capitalism and white supremacy exploits us and grind culture literally grinds us down are excellent. The writing, not so much. The book was really repetitive and disjointed, but the ideas are so good I ended up enjoying it. Perhaps the reason I enjoyed it so much is that it reinforced…

Appreciation 8.24

Hello Darling Ones, How is your summer winding down? Mine has been filled with the west coast fam, who have slowly trickled in over the past week and start to trickle out on Sunday. It’s been a delight to have them here. One of the best side effects of the stroke and benefits of Lexapro is really, really appreciating my family. The Lexapro has eased all the anxiety-based annoyance, and my new disabled state makes me so happy to have…
