First Concerts from Various Birthday Party Attendees

One of the best parts of my birthday party on Saturday was when my friends and family began discussing the first concert they ever attended. As you may or may not know, I like to ask people the first concert they ever attended. Sometimes, I have to ask the follow-up, “what was the first concert you paid your own money to attend?”

The topic came up quite naturally because The Jets were (obviously) on my birthday playlist [aside, Kurtis deemed the playlist awesome which made me pretty happy because I spent a lot of time on that playlist] and my cousin Patty told the story of how our mom invited her to go to the State Fair, but only if she’d take us to The Jets & Limited Warranty concert.

She went on to tell us how the upcoming Jets concert is being advertised on the radio all the time and every time she hears the commercial she thinks of us. I then had to explain to her that Joan Jett, who is playing soon, and The Jets are nowhere near the same thing, but that I loved Joan Jett and was kind of stoked to be thought of whenever she came up.

This, of course, led the crowd to talking about their first concerts and man, I have to say I was mighty impressed by some of the first concerts. Here’s a short list of those that I remember (or remembered today thanks to Twitter):

  • Kurtis: George Thorogood & The Destroyers
  • Angela: Sting
  • Peabo: Belinda Carlisle (which I remembered from that one night at Grumpy’s)
  • Cousin Laurie: Prince (which is perfect for the cousin/babysitter who ignited my love of Rock & Roll).
  • Cousin Steve: Rod Stewart
  • Atom: Garth Brooks
  • Aunt Anna: The Grateful Dead or maybe Pink Floyd (she was pretty sure it was The Dead, but she saw Pink Floyd around the same time. Someone asked her if she was on acid and maybe that’s why she couldn’t exactly remember and she said, “Yes.”
  • My mom: Glenn Campbell (she thinks, she couldn’t remember it either.

I think my Cousin Korey also said his first concert was George Thorogood, but I was well into my second gin & tonic at that point and I can’t remember. Also, I’m practically FORTY! so I can’t remember everything all the time anymore without writing it down.

My first concert was Olivia Newton John on the Physical tour at the St Paul Civic Center. I went with my mom and sister and I remember that I fell asleep at it.

The first one I paid for myself was Living Colour at the Orpheum in ’91.

The first concert I paid for myself was Bell Biv Devoe at (I think) the old Met Center.

Was totally impressed that you remembered that, by the way.
