so i bought book-lover’s trivial pursuit last week, and this weekend we gathered together to play it. first of all, it’s damn hard. i kinda love it. it’s nice to be challenged.
second of all, max and jaycie are some sort of children’s literature savants. as i was reading one question about some chimpanzee book max jumps up and shouts, “that one’s easy, it’s jane goodall.” jaycie did the same thing with some damn dragon book. nothing’s worse than getting a question wrong that your niece and nephew get right.
nice.
but the best part of the night was this little exchange:
“what william golding novel tells the story of Ralph and Piggy after their plane crashes on a deserted island?” i asked.
“i dunno,” sister #2 said. “the hobbit”
“the fucking hobbit are you kidding? ” i said. “they didn’t even have airplanes. what’s a plane gonna land in the fucking shire? it’s lord of the flies.”
“who wrote the hobbit?” she asked.
“JRR Tolkien,” the stink and i said.
“right, lord of the rings, lord of the flies, it’s all the same.”
Lord of the Flies is one of my favorite books of all time!
