tonight, i’ve learned a little lesson about the importance of food. my weekend eating habits must change, because they are starting to put a cramp in my style.
my friend jeff (not that jeff a different one) and i journeyed to first ave to see Lucinda Williams. we stood around drinking a few beers and listening to the opening act, having a good time and what not. when all of a sudden sweat began pouring from my body. sure it was hot in there and everything, but not enough to be dripping sweat from standing motionless.
i walked down to the bar to get a bottle of water, because i thought that would help. i leaned over the bar and the room began to swim, i couldn’t hear and i had tunnel vision. i just leaned on the bar with my head down and ordered an orange juice. it helped a little.
i drank it down and ran into my friend Dave. Dave! Dave from Eau Claire. i was crushed because he didn’t even recognize me.
“dave,” i asked and he smiled at me.
“hi,” he said.
“hi,” i said.
then he just smiled.
“are you dave from yellow #5,” i asked, worried that maybe it was some random dave who looked just like the dave i once knew.
“i was,” he said.
“it’s me, jodi chromey,” i shouted.
“your hair,” he said. “i thought it was you. with the tattoo and the height, but your hair. . . it’s so short.”
“i know.”
“wow,” he said. “you look great.”
“thanks!”
we chatted a bit, talking about how it’s been nearly a decade since we’ve seen each other. then my head started to swim again, and i had to go lean on the bar.
i ordered another orange juice and a bottle of water. i knew i was sick from the lack of eating all day. my blood sugar was probably non-existant. poor jeff thought i was gonna die.
“i didn’t know you were diabetic,” he said.
“i’m not, i just haven’t eaten today.”
“at all?”
“no.”
“that’s dumb.”
“i know.”
eventually the orange juice kicked in and i was able to enjoy the show.
lu was fucking amazing. i hope i can kick like 1/8th as much as when i’m 50 as she does.
she did “still i long for your kiss” and it nearly broke me right in two. she also did “essence” and my heart beat all kinds of wonky. it was amazing. just amazing. she played for like 2 hours. if you ever have a chance to see her, i highly reccomend it.
best of all, she did the westerberg song “bleeding fingers” and gave a little speech about the wonderfulness of paul. the crowd went wild. it was so great to see and hear so much support for him and to see lu preaching the gospel. rad.
