in class, i thought of you

there must be a children’s poetry class taught in the same room at the loft where my class is taught. today the walls were festooned with poetic works of art. one said “what material is your name” another “how do you build a simile” and the third, “what does a word feel like” and on the wall were tacked a bunch of brown paper lunch sacks, with words and definitions scrawled on them in children’s handwriting. one of the bags had fubsy: somwhat fat and squat. inside, was a spongy, styrofoamy thing.

hah! i’m famous with the kindergarten set!

just for the record, i prefer “being chubby and somewhat squat” as a definition, though.

My name is made of a rayon/cotton blend that is warm and silky at the same time. It’s strong when it’s wrapped up in itself, but stretches and can be fragile when laid wide open. It can be carried around with you in the same hand you suck your thumb with so that the soft edges can flit across the bridge of your nose while you watch the pre-cartoon Farm Reports on TV during the wee hours of the morning on a summertime Saturday. Carefree. Secure.

I think my name would be made of cut glass…in the sun it looks brilliant, but upon closer inspection you cut your fingers on the cold, harsh edges. What I mean is, I gotta stop relying on my intelligence and instead soften up my demeanor so that I do not push everyone away.
Anyway, I like visiting my wife’s godmother because she works as a media specialist at a Bloomington grade school. She has so many fun stories of kids and what they are doing. She loves working with children so much that it is infectious. After being with her, I actually want to have children myself!

ScottMcG: It seems that those who truly have the impact to change the world to a better place are those who lead and teach by example, no big hoohaws, no special degree, just by living who they are sincerely. What fun to be by someone so infectious.
