Making fun of the dead people’s song

The Tibbles are obsessed with the Titanic. I have no idea why or how this started. All I know is that we check out a lot of books about the Titanic and spend a lot of time discussing it. They’ve recently seen the movie which creates all kinds of awkward situations and conversations.

For instance, one morning over our Peanut Butter Cheerios, Liam said, apropos of nothing, “It’s all Rose’s fault Jack died. There was room on the door for him and she didn’t let him on.”

And another time, over lunch, Cade talked about how the ending wasn’t sad at all because Rose got to go to heaven and see all her friends and do you think we all go to heaven on the Titanic?

Now, as I type, they’ve YouTubed some sort of Titanic something. Some sort of video featuring that Celine Dion song that I cannot remember the name of. You know the song and you know it will leave your ears bleeding if you listen to it too long.

“Turn that down,” I screeched.
“Why?” Liam and Cade protested.
“That song is awful,” I said. “It’s so dumb.”
“Hey,” Liam said, turning around and pointing at me. “Don’t say that. That’s a bad word and millions of people died.
“Millions of people didn’t die,” I said.
“Well, more people died than survived,” Cade said.
“So, that doesn’t make that song any good.”
“You are making the dead people sad,” Liam said. “You shouldn’t make fun of the dead people’s song.”

I gave up at that point. There was no wining the argument.

I was fascinated by the sinking of the Titanic when i was a kid too because my grandfather had a book about it with pictures of the sinking ship and drowning people. Luckily there wasn’t that stupid movie with its horrid theme song to pollute the tale. Although the recreation of the ship was amazing. I wouldn’t mind chillin’ there when i’m dead. And the boys are completely right about Rose, that selfish….. My grandfather also had a book about the great San Francisco earthquake and fire. Maybe you could introduce the Tibbles to THAT disaster and use the song ‘Fire’ by The Crazy World of Arthur Brown as the theme song.

“My Heart Will Go On” is the name of that song, I believe. And the only reason I know that…
Mrs. NBFB and I were on a cruise some years back. Chilling on deck, getting some sun by the pool – with a 3 piece calypso band playing covers. And they played that song – ON A CRUISE SHIP. Bassist, cheesy casio keyboard, and steel drum (playing the melody, no vocals). It was so classic, so cheesy, so delightfully ironic, I’ll never forget it.
