I’ve spent this morning chatting with Sister #2 about babysitting the kids tomorrow, publishing short fiction, tattoos, their upcoming trip to Memphis and Florida, and the bowling alley. That’s how sisters talk, flitting from one topic to the next with no transition at all.
I’m not sure if I’ve mentioned this, but Sister #2 is a social worker. In fact, she will be getting her Masters in Social Work in May.
Having a social worker in the family is not always easy, especially when the social worker is your super-opinionated, not afraid to tell you the truth, sister. However, when you are a lazy dreamer with grand aspirations who happens to be the all-time queen procrastinatrix it’s a good thing.
So we’ve been chatting this morning and I was telling her about random writing things.
“My goal this summer is to get you to submit some of your work somewhere,” she said. “Also you need to put ads on your Web site so you can quit the Canucks.”
“Oh?” I said, blinking at the computer screen since we were chatting via IM.
“Yes, you need to write full-time and you need to take small steps to get to that point,” she said.
“I hadn’t really thought about it,” I said.
“I know,” she said. “I’m big into goal planning lately and you’re my first project.”
“Good,” I said. “I have no goals.”
“That’s what so frustrating!” she said. “You have so much potential and no goals.”
This, of course, will prove to be one of the most interesting exercises I’ve undertaken in ages.
Do we have the same sister? My youngest sister is ten years younger than me, and just got her MSW, is highly opinionated, and loves giving me “advice” about my life. We are the closest sibling pair in the family, though…
BTW, I’m headed out to see Lucinda Williams at the Ryman Auditorium tonight. Woo Hoo!
I’ve been a silent reader of yours for a long time and I thought (just last night) that you really should put some ads on your site and write full-time. You have so much talent. Go for it!
I hate goals. They just remind me what a colossal underachiever I am.
