the night my face exploded

for class last night, the vodo had us read David Gates’ story “The Mail Lady.” the story is about this old born-again Christian chemist whose had a stroke. it’s a funny, weird story, that i really, really enjoyed.

at one point while were were discussing thes tory, someone mentioned how Lew (the christian chemist) was kind of annoying. the chain of events that one innocent comment unleashed is something i will probably blush about for days.

i don’t mention it too often, but i have a weird mystery disease. i’m not sure if the disease has a name, but it is most certainly an illness of some sort that effects people of all races, creeds, genders, and political parties. this disease seems to attack the inner-censor portion of the brain, rendering it absolutely useless. i think perhaps kanye wayne and dick cheney are also afflicted by this mystery unnamed disease.

so i’m in rather bizarre company. we should probably get together and get some sort of telethon going.

anyway, last night my odd disease became completely apparent to every single one of my classmates. see, after me ‘mate called Lew kind of annoying. i let loose with a loud and so not PC “as are most born again christians.”

the words flew out of my mouth so fast and without any input from my brain, it was like i was hearing them at the exact same time as me ‘mates. i was stunned.

and though the words came out so quickly, it was like what happened next ran in slow motion.

i heard that stunned intake of breath from the entire class, and i felt my face grow hotter and hotter, my hand inched toward my mouth to cover the gaping hole before anything else came tumbling out.

the vodo said, “hey now.”
kelly started to laugh.
tears started to burn my eyes.
the vodo begin to laugh.
the entire class started laughing.
and then my face exploded with the force of my blushing.

this, of course, wouldn’t have been quite so bad if the vodo hadn’t come into class last night talking about some memo he got from The Loft. it seems that the instructors are supposed to be careful about the use of humor in their classes because some students are getting offended.

yeah, go me!

It was funny ’cause it’s true.

Go you! What cool classmates you have! Much better than in my class where a born-again freaked and stormed out of class during an analysis of Brect’s play “Mother Courage…” because it exposed the foolishness of fighting wars in the name of God… she thought it was just making fun of her faith *sigh*
