well it’s your misfortune that sweetens my song

after the mike doughty show back in october, i never ever got around to really talking about the concert. that’s because it’s hard to talk about a religious experience, especially when you’re trying to preach to the unconverted.

i know this might come as a suprise to you, but there are people who don’t know who mike doughty is. even more shocking, there are people in my life who don’t particularly care for the beautiful beauty of the beautasciousness of mike doughty. i am considering removing those people from my life, because i cannot condone since misdirection.

anyway, the concert as i have mentioned prior was fucking fabulous. a-w-e-s-o-m-e. but my favorite, my all time absolute favorite moment was when he came back for the encore and had us sing “Your Misfortune” with him.

the song is just so so so, well words can’t explain how amazing this song is. it’s just so hopeful and helpful and all those kinds of optimistic things that get me off (hence my love of i will dare). it’s the kind of song that i love so much that if i think about it too much (which i often do) my eyes sting with tears and my throat gets all cloggy with emotion.

It verses like:
I can be the friend you want
I can be your confidante
I can be the right reminder at the right time
Throwing out the lifeline

it’s not exactly poetic, i know. but with his voice and his emotion, it makes me all smooshy.

but what makes me smooshiest of all, is now whenever i hear the song (and it just came on Kathleen Turner Overdrive) i think back to that night at first ave. when he made us do a sing along to this song. in the past, he always made the audience sing along to ‘Janine’ which is good and fine song, but, well, it gets old after a bit.

so when he had us all standing there singing “your misfortune” i was in heaven. and really if the thought of a jam packed, sweaty crowd at first avenue whisphering “stand in the light, stand in the light, stand in the light” doesn’t give you goosebumps, well then your heart just might be made of stone.

because here, right now, just as i type about it and think about it and how happy it made me, well, my eyes are stinging and my throat is getting all cloggy.
