in trying times, i’m glad i don’t have tv

if i had a tv right now, i think i’d spend a majority of my time sitting in front of it crying my eyes out and feeling utterly helpless. since the tv doesn’t really work (except to watch DVDs and thankfully, as far as i know, CNN isn’t available on DVD)my Katrina coverage is limited to what i hear on NPR and read in the newspaper. this is more than enough. just looking at the main page of nytimes.com reduces me to tears.

i always feel as if i’m obligated to talk about these huge events, even though i have nothing to say. i can’t imagine which words i could string together to convey the deep sadness and horror. so instead i will continue talking about masturbation, the fact that tommy stinson is joining soul asylum, and how much i really hate packing.

My condolences goes out to the victims. The instance of the crime and violence must be making matters much worse. What im surprised that people are forgetting, is that new-orleans has a high rate of crime anyhow. This includes drugs abuse, sexual and violent crime. It is therefore reasonable to assume that some level of crime is occuring in the affected areas, which could either be more or less than currently reported. Probably a mix of survival, fear and criminality…. it must be hell to be there!

The victims of katrina should therefore be on their guard. I would!

The govt. should have acted sooner, and should be doing more now. Im sure that the fact New Orleans is a Southern State and has a high black population has alot to do with it!
