every time a child says ‘i don’t believe in fairies’ a little fairy out there falls down dead

thanks to the writer’s almanac, i know that today is the birthday of J.M. Barrie the author of Peter Pan.

Peter Pan was my favorite book as a a kid. I remember seeing the play in school and clapping so hard when they asked us if we believe in fairies and that if we did we had to clap to bring Tinkerbell back to life that i thought my hands would fall right off. Oh and I cried. I cried and cried and cried a little more. I was very very worried for ol’ Tink.

Recently, I watched the Johnny Depp movie “Finding Neverland.” I, of course, loved it (and not just because it had the tres delectable mr. depp in it). What surprised me the most is that I was going along fine, watching the movie, digging it and how pretty it was. Then they got to the part where they have to clap for the dying Tinkerbell, and suddenly I was crying and gulping down sobs. I think it must be encoded in my genes to respond to that scene. Perhaps I am a fairy only disguised as a human, or maybe I was a fairy in another life. or, perhaps, I’m just a big goober.

Well, then I’m a big goober too, because that scene, no matter how many times I watch it, always chokes me up.

I have only seen the movie from that part on. I walked in on the boyfriend and roommate watching it. So I had *NO* warning, and I was just a sobbing wreck.

(and by the way, you are not a big goober)
