the bossman has come up with an all new and exciting way to make me feel like complete shit. yes, we all thought that the not talking me for 3 weeks would be enough, or the not responding to my e-mail but no, that’s not it! now, whenever i talk to the artguy or the freelance designer, the bossman has to hightail it right over cutting each conversation short with whatever it is he needs to talk to those two about.
i thought it was just me, but then the artguy verified my paranoia. apparently the bossman wants nobody to talk to me. why does that man hate me so?

The artguy actually said that the boss said no one should talk to you????? Did he say why 1. Bossman said that and 2. why he and the artguy were discussing you in the first place?
Fishy as hell.
no. the artguy just verified the fact that the bossman did, in fact, cut off every conversation i had with him and the freelancer today. it was weird. really, really weird. because we weren’t just talking about “what is art” and stuff today, we were actually talking about work stuff.
Big girl pants time. Gotta talk to the boss man. Tell him that it’s how YOU feel; Acusing him will only back him into a corner he’ll have to fight his way through. By presenting it to him in a way he can fix will go a long way to improving your situation. Yes, after such a confrontation, you are allowed to go to the ladies room and puke.
You can do it, Jodi. You’re a Supergenius and Awesomegirl rolled into one. You are a bright shining star.
grrl, you can’t let the work goblins get you down. walk into the bossman’s office and tell him that you are concerned about the communication breakdown between the two of you. i’d leave artguy and freelance guy out of it.
take a pad and pen in the meeting with you, and when it’s all done…start documenting! i know that i’ve told you this before, but seriously – start doing it.
as hr-grrl, i have your best intrests in mind, however the bossman has the company’s best intrest in mind – two totally different things.
my advice – stop talking to other co-workers about it and start writing things down.
Sounds like (and I don’t know because I’m not there) boss man is getting irritated that too much extraneous talking is going on and it’s reached the point that he’s overreacting even when it’s work related. Managerial types want to see the work get done and the employees not wasting the company nickel. Sometimes they don’t realize that if the employees are given a certain degree of lassitude and trust the employees will pay them back with hard, hard work. I’d keep my nose to the grindstone and go out for drinks after work with artguy, minion, free lance and play the connect 4 games and joke around then.
A lot of times when people are holding their tongue, they are on the verge of exploding and that’s why they don’t say anything.
oops, that’s supposed to be latitude, not lassitude…what a dolt I am.
At my last job I had a very similar situation with my boss. The ultimate solution was him leaving the company (yay!), but before that I dealt with it in the short term by discussing with him some of things that were bothering me. And not just whining, I would schedule time with him and bring a list of issues that concerned me about our working relationship, discussing each point with some specific examples. I kept it non-confrontational and more like “how can we fix this?” instead of “here’s how you suck”, and it would actually help for a little while.
Good luck and hang in there.
