You know, my wife has recently been befriended by Gordon Lish who claims to have, among other things, rewritten Ray Carver’s work to such an extent that he is actually a co-writer. That’s tall stuff until you read some of Carver’s stories from before he met Gordon… and from after they parted ways and Tess Gallagher was editing them. There is a marked, marked difference in quality and style. The meat is still there, but the voice wavers.
