fun and games

name this tune:
i’ve seen your hand turn saintly on the radio dial
i’ve seen the airwaves pull your eyes towards heaven
outside topeka and the phone lines her good teeth smile was winding down

now, it’s your turn.

true dreams of witchita! soul coughing! what do i win?

(now i wish i had that CD here at work… sigh)

  2. jodi 22.Mar.04 at 1:38 pm

you win the right to make us name a tune. see how this works?

  3. andrea 22.Mar.04 at 4:08 pm

okay, how about one that’s in my head:

i tried to fake it, but you wouldn’t play along. i watched you naked, innocent and holding on. snowflakes make your bones ache in winter – your face will not fade, only linger

  4. jodi 22.Mar.04 at 4:09 pm

    oh, that’s a toughie.

  5. andrea 22.Mar.04 at 4:39 pm

i’d give you the next line, but that’d just give it away. but here’s a line from elsewhere in the song:

You could never stand living with a man
Who could only lead you half way to love

  6. jodi 22.Mar.04 at 4:41 pm

angelyne! the jayhawks, i feel so stupid!

    now it’s my turn.

  7. jodi 22.Mar.04 at 4:46 pm

ok this is an easy one:
and he’s a poor boy, empty as a pocket, empty as a pocket with nothing to lose.

  8. heather 22.Mar.04 at 6:00 pm

i need to talk to you two about july, btw. =)

  9. wendy 22.Mar.04 at 6:21 pm

diamonds on the soles of her shoes!?

i don’t know why i know so much paul simon… it scares me sometimes.

  10. Dana 22.Mar.04 at 6:24 pm

So is Wendy going to give us a lyric or what?

  11. jodi 22.Mar.04 at 6:47 pm

yes, now it’s wendy’s turn. see how this works?

  12. wendy 22.Mar.04 at 9:25 pm

Wendy kinda sucks at being a little more quick at this! Wait. That’s not the lyric!

    Probably an easy one:
Sharin’ horizons that are new to us
Watchin’ the signs along the way
Talkin’ it over just the two of us
Workin’ together day to day, together

  13. emma 22.Mar.04 at 10:17 pm

    just the two of us.

  14. robin 22.Mar.04 at 10:24 pm

We’ve Only Just Begun, the carpenters. now you’re talking my generation.

okay, here goes , jodi, you can’t answer this one —

why don’t you tell your dad get off my back?
tell him what we said ’bout ‘paint it black’.

  15. wendy 22.Mar.04 at 10:24 pm

not unless it’s a different version of “just the two of us” then the ones i’ve heard. 🙂

  16. jodi 22.Mar.04 at 10:28 pm

    i didn’t know wendy’s but i TOTALLY know robin’s.

  17. wendy 23.Mar.04 at 7:58 am

I got nothin on that one, Robin. Not even a clue.

  18. minnekeith 23.Mar.04 at 8:23 am

a man in my shoes runs a light
and all the papers lied tonight
    but falling over you
is the news of the day

  19. jodi 23.Mar.04 at 9:26 am

clearly minnekeith doesn’t get the concept. so i’m barging in. robin’s song was “thirteen” by big star and keith’s song was “ghost in you” by either counting crows or perhaps the psychedelic furs, maybe, i can’t remember exactly.

and now you have to guess which song these lyrics are stolen from:
well she used to have a carefree mind of her own and a delicate look in her eyes.

  20. minnekeith 23.Mar.04 at 10:31 am

So sorry, I hadn’t had my coffee yet.

I should know jodi’s. It’s on the tip o’ the tongue. Paul maybe?

    (Counting crows? Yuck!)

  21. jodi 23.Mar.04 at 10:37 am

you are ice cold, it’s not paul at all.

  22. minnekeith 23.Mar.04 at 11:24 am

Elvis Costello. Her name was Veronica.

  23. jodi 23.Mar.04 at 11:44 am

see, now it’s your turn. see how it works?

  24. dwee 23.Mar.04 at 11:52 am

    here’s one:

Sometimes I wish I could stop you from
saying those stupid things that you say

Somebody better turn out the big lights,
’cause I can’t stand to see you this
    way.

  25. minnekeith 23.Mar.04 at 1:42 pm

Sometimes when this place gets kind of empty,
Sound of their breath fades with the light.
I think about the loveless fascination,

  26. Carie 23.Mar.04 at 2:14 pm

Dwee’s is Alison by Elvis Costello,
Minnekeith’s is Under the Milky Way by…The Church? I think.
    Try this one….

    Words like violence
    Break the silence
    Come crashing in
    Into my little world

  27. jodi 23.Mar.04 at 2:19 pm

oh, easy! enjoy the silence by depeche mode

  28. jodi 23.Mar.04 at 2:22 pm

she would never say where she came from
yesterday don’t matter if it’s gone
    while the sun is bright
    or in the darkest night
    no one knows
    she comes and goes

  29. Dana 23.Mar.04 at 3:04 pm

    Ruby Tuesday

    Here’s mine:
“In the heat with a blue jean girl
burnin’ love comes once in a lifetime.
Oo the memories never fade away
Golden girl, I’ll keep you forever”

    Damn that song kills me.

  30. UH 23.Mar.04 at 3:07 pm

    Stoned In Love – Journey.

    I’m embarrassed to know that.

  31. UH 23.Mar.04 at 3:11 pm

    Cowboys are lonesome
    And cowboys are blue
And they make the ladies so sad.

  32. Dana 23.Mar.04 at 3:41 pm

Wow. Then I guess I should be really embarrassed to love that song, huh?

  33. Wendy 23.Mar.04 at 3:51 pm

lyle lovett’s walk through the bottomland!

  34. Thomas 23.Mar.04 at 3:53 pm

    Mr. Julia Roberts… er… Lyle Lovett…

    Walk through the Bottomland.

  35. Thomas 23.Mar.04 at 3:53 pm

    D’oh!

  36. Wendy 23.Mar.04 at 3:54 pm

But she has faith in me, and so I go on trying faithfully,
And who knows maybe on some special night, if my song is right,
    I will find a way, find a way…

  37. jodi 23.Mar.04 at 4:51 pm

you guys are good, lyle had me stumped. but you can’t fool me with Kenny– She Believes in Me

  38. jodi 23.Mar.04 at 4:54 pm

i’m your friend just like you think it should be
did you think i would stand here and lie
while our moment was passing us by

  39. Dana 23.Mar.04 at 7:08 pm

Ooooh. Cyndi Lauper, Change of Heart. Nice one.

    Mine says:
“He spends his evenings alone in his hotel room
Keeping his thoughts to himself he’d be leaving soon
Wishing he was miles and miles away
Nothing in this world nothing would make him stay”

  40. Dick 24.Mar.04 at 9:06 am

    Queen…

Why is he holding her hand?
When He’s supposed to be mine?

  41. Thomas 24.Mar.04 at 10:01 am

Lesley Gore – Its My Party (I have that in our mp3 rotation playing here in the office)

  42. Thomas 24.Mar.04 at 10:05 am

Here’s mine, from the same mp3 rotation:

    I’ve never plucked a rooster,
and I’m not too good at ping-pong,
and I’ve never thrown my mashed potatoes up against the wall.

  43. Wendy 24.Mar.04 at 10:07 am

I am *so* not admitting I know that.

  44. Dick of (Beantown) 24.Mar.04 at 11:50 am

This song has never been to Boston in the fall.

    I won’t own it either!

  45. Thomas 24.Mar.04 at 12:04 pm

Following that song in my playlist is Falco’s “Rock Me Amadeus”, then David Soul’s “Don’t give up on us, Baby”, Ace of Base’s “(I saw the) Sign” finishing off with a chair dance session and sing along with to Maroon 5: “Is anyone out there, ’cause it’s getting harder and harder to breathe…”

    So just guess it, already…

  46. jodi 24.Mar.04 at 12:12 pm

    ok, i think it’s wendy’s turn.

  47. Wendy 24.Mar.04 at 12:17 pm

It comes from a lot of babysitting duties anytime I go back to my hometown for a visit.

The Pirates Who Don’t Do Anything by Larry the Cucumber!

  48. Wendy 24.Mar.04 at 12:19 pm

I’m floatin’ on down to New Orleans
Goin’ to pick up on some swingin’ scenes
    I know I’ll know a better day
I’ll go down groovin’ all the way

  49. Thomas 24.Mar.04 at 12:54 pm

Agh! I have Season One on DVD… Wendy, stop reaching into my brain like that!

The Monkees – Going (Goin’?) Down

  50. Thomas 24.Mar.04 at 12:57 pm

    We’re drawin’ the line,
    So keep your noses hidden!
    We’re hangin’ a sign,
    Says “Visitors forbidden”
    And we ain’t kiddin’!

  51. Dana 24.Mar.04 at 1:05 pm

Dude! West Side Story! When you’re a jet…

  52. Dana 24.Mar.04 at 1:11 pm

“I held her close, until the storm passed
And we fell down laughing in the wet grass.
Both our bodies drying in the sunshine, sweet sunshine.
So sha la la la la la my lady
In the sun with your dress undone.
Now every mile away and every day
    cuts a little bit deeper.”

  53. Thomas 24.Mar.04 at 1:15 pm

Good one! I’ve answered two for today, so I’m opting out until tomorrow.

  54. Wendy 24.Mar.04 at 1:27 pm

Thomas, that’s awesome! I just put Season 1 and Season 2 on my Netflix list!

  55. jodi 24.Mar.04 at 2:08 pm

    thuder island!

    now it’s my turn:
i’m surprised that you’ve never been told before that you’re lovely and you’re perfect and that somebody wants you.

  56. Dick 24.Mar.04 at 4:02 pm

    Semisonic f.n.t.

how about: Pretty women with their lovers by their side it’s like an awful dream, I have most every night!

  57. Thomas 24.Mar.04 at 4:21 pm

    Oh… Steely Dan – On the Dunes…

Reminds me of incense, seeds on a album sleeve and 8-tracks… My older siblings artifacts, mind you…

  58. Thomas 24.Mar.04 at 4:25 pm

Here’s an easy one from around the same time:

Bigger they are they think they have more power
They’re on the phone me say that on (every) hour
Me for want to use it once an’ now me call me lover
Lover who I’ll be callin is the one Tammy
An’ me love her in me heart down to my belly

  59. jodi 24.Mar.04 at 4:41 pm

    informer!

now i’m gonna give you all a toughie:
the chills that you spill up my back
keep me filled with satisfaction when we’re done
    satisfaction of what’s to come
    i couldn’t ask for another

  60. Dana 24.Mar.04 at 7:12 pm

Dee-lite. Groove is in the heart! Excellent.

  61. Dana 24.Mar.04 at 7:13 pm

    Someone’ll get this super-fast.

    “Now Muriel plays piano
    Every Friday at the Hollywood
And they brought me down to see her
And they asked me if I would –
    Do a little number
And I sang with all my might
    And she said –
Tell me are you a Christian child?
    And I said Ma’am I am tonight.”

  62. Wendy 24.Mar.04 at 9:23 pm

    Walkin’ in Memphis!

Walking with my feet ten feet off of the Beale
    Walking in Memphis
Do I really feel the way I feel?

    I *heart* that song!

  63. Wendy 24.Mar.04 at 11:19 pm

I wait in the darkness of my lonely room
Filled with sadness, filled with gloom
Hoping soon that you’ll walk back through that door
And love me like you tried before

  64. Dick 25.Mar.04 at 7:36 am

    Band of Gold
    Freda Pain..Pane..Payne

    Here is a tough one.

We’re the dead girls of London,
    We think we are fine,
    We ain’t hittin on nothing,
But the boutique frame of mind.

  65. Thomas 25.Mar.04 at 10:34 am

Odd thing about that; My nickname in High School Band was Dweezil, so I know the Frank Zappa version of that song. Dead Girls of London.

  66. jodi 25.Mar.04 at 10:36 am

well thomas? pick one i’d know.

  67. Thomas 25.Mar.04 at 10:40 am

    Now everybody…
    Yes, everybody…
    Sing along with this…
    No excuses…
It’s corny, but all you love it anyway just ’cause…
    1, 2, 3, 4!

    I’m sleeping
And right in the middle of a good dream
Like all at once I wake up
From something that keeps knockin’ at my brain.
Before I go insane I hold my pillow to my head
And spring up in my bed
Screaming out the words I dread:

  68. courtney 25.Mar.04 at 11:07 am

    * screams*
    I think I love you!

    The Partridge Family.

  69. courtney 25.Mar.04 at 11:11 am

okay, here is a tough one.

    “From all these things unheard
If a chosen word has got you cornered
    Then it’s a lesson learned
Like close the book before it burns you now.

    Come away, come away.
    From all these things unseen
At the price you paid I promise you won’t believe anything they say,
Belief will only disappoint you now.

Well, in case you never noticed the path you never chose has chosen you.”

  70. jodi 25.Mar.04 at 11:14 am

jason mraz, hey love. i *knew* you’d choose something by him.

  71. jodi 25.Mar.04 at 11:21 am

i met her in the club down in north soho
where you drink champagne and it tastes just like cherry cola

  72. courtney 25.Mar.04 at 11:26 am

    Lola!

The Kinks… I love that song.

  73. courtney 25.Mar.04 at 11:31 am

    from distant star
    to this here bar
    the me, the you
    where are we now?
    horray the blues
    of everyone

  74. Dana 25.Mar.04 at 4:39 pm

Wow. That one shut the competition down, huh?

  75. UH 25.Mar.04 at 6:47 pm

Oh for fuck’s sake, it’s Allison by the Pixies.

    Try this:

“Then one by one the stars would all go out
And you and I would simply fly away.”

  76. Dick 26.Mar.04 at 7:59 am

I used to play that one at weddings…If by Bread.

Licorice tattoo, turned a gun metal blue,
Scrawled across the shoulders of a dying town.

  77. jodi 26.Mar.04 at 8:16 am

finally, one i know! tom waits burma shave.

sheesh, i’ve been waiting for a whole day.

  78. jodi 26.Mar.04 at 8:20 am

and now the time has come so my love i must go
and though i lose a friend in the end you will know, ohhhhh

  79. Carie 26.Mar.04 at 8:52 am

    Beatles! I’ll follow the sun.

    Here’s one:

I lost myself on a cool damp night
Gave myself in that misty light
    I was hypnotized by a strange delight…

  80. andrea 26.Mar.04 at 9:47 am

man, i suck at this. i know i started off strong with soul coughing and all, but i suck!

  81. jodi 26.Mar.04 at 9:50 am

lilac wine! lilac wine! i love jeff buckley.

  82. jodi 26.Mar.04 at 9:52 am

excuse me but can i be you for awhile
my dog won’t bite if you sit real still
i got the anti-christ in the kitchen yelling at me again

  83. Carie 26.Mar.04 at 10:04 am

Tori Amos- Silent all these years.
    Wow, I love that song!

  84. Carie 26.Mar.04 at 10:05 am

    I would go out tonight
But I haven’t got a stitch to wear
this man said, it’s gruesome that someone so handsome should care

  85. jodi 26.Mar.04 at 10:08 am

    this charming man the smiths

  86. jodi 26.Mar.04 at 10:09 am

    the truth is not kind
    you said neither am i
    the air outside so soft
    saying everything, everything

  87. Carie 26.Mar.04 at 10:31 am

all i want is to feel this way,
    toad the wet sprocket.

  88. Thomas 26.Mar.04 at 10:33 am

Toad the Wet Sprocket: All I Want.

Still played on a regular basis by our local “alternative rock” station that claims to have “today’s best hits”.

I like the song, but it’s a bit aged.

  89. Thomas 26.Mar.04 at 10:34 am

    Carrie wins… D’OH!

  90. Carie 26.Mar.04 at 10:35 am

    whatever happened to a boyfriend
the kind of guy who tries to win you over?
and whatever happened to a boyfriend
the kind of guy who makes love cause he’s in it?

  91. Carie 26.Mar.04 at 10:36 am

    Sorry Thomas! 🙂

  92. jodi 26.Mar.04 at 10:42 am

    fuck and run, liz phair.

    i am the QUEEN today.

  93. jodi 26.Mar.04 at 10:46 am

where you stand with your cool hat of silence
where you grip her love like a driver’s license
i’ve seen you fire up the gas in the engine valves
i’ve seen your hand turn silently on the radio dial
i’ve seen the airwaves pull your eyes toward heaven
outside topek and the phone lines, her good teeth smile was winding down

  94. Thomas 26.Mar.04 at 11:12 am

true dreams of witchita: soul coughing

Trick question, Jodi, it’s only the very first one in this game again.

  95. Thomas 26.Mar.04 at 11:14 am

    Slow pitch this time…

    He wanted her,
    she’d never tell;
Secretly she wanted him as well
    But all of her friends
    stuck up their nose;
They had a problem with his baggy clothes

  96. jodi 26.Mar.04 at 11:15 am

    i’m redundant.

    your’s is sk8r boi.

  97. Wendy 26.Mar.04 at 2:34 pm

I can’t believe Jodi’s leaving us hanging here!

  98. Thomas 26.Mar.04 at 3:47 pm

If she doesn’t think of something soon, I think we should pick a song for her… Or talk about the merits of Boxers Vs. Briefs!

  99. Carie 26.Mar.04 at 3:58 pm

I prefer boxers on a man anyday.

  100. Thomas 26.Mar.04 at 4:47 pm

I mentioned the underwear debate only because that was the one and only thread (that I know of) that Jodi locked the comments on. Too many guys were posting about how, due to their freakishly large penii, boxers were much better when they became turgid. Apparently not only do guys online have these Horse Cocks, but they also come to life for no reason 7 to 8 times a day. They also seem to need women online to send them pictures of themselves naked. Curious that even with such enromous endowments, they still can’t find live women to share this “gift” with.

  101. keith 26.Mar.04 at 4:54 pm

My own manhood is just slightly better endowed then my musical lyric knowledge. Now, let’s see . . . how many have I answered? Hmmm. It seems none.

But I’m hopeful. Just like I own boxers. You never know . . .

  102. jodi 26.Mar.04 at 4:54 pm

i’ve actually closed comments on quite a few posts, not any that you would probably noticed– like one i did about tanning, and then i got roughly 9038 comments about the pros and cons of tanning, so i just closed it. also one i did about chuck taylors, and then i got 932 comments from people wondering where they could get gucci chucks. so yeah, i don’t close them too often, only when i notcied that a particular post that’s not really provacative ends up with a plethora of comments that say things like WEST SIDE REpRaZeNtS boyeeee.

    you know?

  103. Dana 26.Mar.04 at 5:00 pm

    Jodi? Dear?… Snoogums?… Song lyrics?

  104. jodi 26.Mar.04 at 5:23 pm

i’m the monster underneath your bed that you’re not afraid of yet
but you let me in, and i feel alright, yeah i feel alright

  105. Carie 26.Mar.04 at 7:47 pm

    Can’t figure it out Jodi.
But very funny about the underwear debate posts….boyeeee.

  106. somerset 27.Mar.04 at 9:45 pm

    whiskeytown’s “hey there missus lovely”

    try this one:

when the world’s gone crazy and it makes no sense
there’s only one voice to come to your defense
the jury’s out and your eyes search the room
and one friendly face is all you need to see

  107. Dick 29.Mar.04 at 7:59 am

    Its Probably Me.
    Mr. Sting

The woman I love, took from my best friend
Some joker got lucky, stole her back again

  108. jodi 29.Mar.04 at 10:20 am

come on in my kitchen, by who i don’t know. that was a dad song to me.

    i’m up:

and if i should buy jellybeans
have to eat them all in just one sitting
everything it seems i likes a little bit sweeter, a little bit fatter, a little bit harmful for me
and then there’s those other things
which for several reasons we won’t mention
everything about them is a little bit stranger, a little bit harder, a little bit deadly

  109. Wendy 29.Mar.04 at 12:54 pm

    rufus’ cigarettes and chocolate milk.

i could hear the song in my head for the last 2 hours, but couldn’t for the life of me think of the title.

  110. Wendy 29.Mar.04 at 12:59 pm

I could have met you in a sandbox
I could have passed you on the sidewalk
Could I have missed my chance
    And watched you walk away?

  111. jodi 29.Mar.04 at 2:01 pm

john mayer’s love song for no one. ( i am so ashamed)

  112. jodi 29.Mar.04 at 2:06 pm

    i can’t get to sleep
i think about the implications of diving in to deep
    and possibly the complications
especially at night, i worry over situations

  113. Wendy 29.Mar.04 at 2:51 pm

i’m so proud of your john mayer knowledge i could cheer, jodi!

  114. Thomas 29.Mar.04 at 4:41 pm

Jodi pitched that one right to my 80’s addled brain: Men at Work – Overkill (I admit I had to sing the lyrics for the better part of half an hour to come up with Overkill as opposed to “Who Can It Be Now?”

Chromey; Knowing your music background and how you’ve felt in the past, this song should be familiar. It was my favorite for… well… I can’t tell you how long:

So I would choose to be with you,
that’s if the choice were mine to make.
But you can make decisions too,
and you can have this heart to break.

your eyes are poor. you are blind. you see, no beauty could have come from me
i’m a waste of breath, of space, of time

  122. Thomas 31.Mar.04 at 7:39 am

    Yea! It’s back.

Bright Eyes – Waste of Paint.

Someone is well versed in sad, sad music.

  123. Thomas 31.Mar.04 at 7:46 am

This one STILL makes me cry…

I love him, but when the night is over,
he is gone; The river’s just a river.
    Without him the world around me changes;
The trees are bare and everywhere the streets are full of stangers.
    I love him, but everyday I’m learning;
All my life I’ve only been pretending.
    Without me, his world will go on turning;
A world that’s full of happiness that I have never known.

  124. Carie 31.Mar.04 at 9:34 am

ok, that’s ‘on my own’ from les miserables.
a very beautiful song that i mostly remember from singing it in chorus when i was in middle school.

(this is probably an easy one)

“tell me that you’re happy when you’re on your own
tell me that it’s better when you’re all alone
tell me that your body doesn’t miss my touch
tell me that my lovin didn’t mean that much
tell me you ain’t dying when you’re crying for me…..”

  125. jodi 31.Mar.04 at 9:59 am

    Violent Femmes – Girl Trouble.

  132. Thomas 31.Mar.04 at 11:18 am

    Along the nostalgic group vein…

    I had a helpful discussion
I had to sleep in a chair
I laid my head on a cushion
    Because it was there

  133. Thomas 31.Mar.04 at 4:07 pm

Wow… Was I that far out in my youth? I’ll pick something else if Jodi would like…

  134. Thomas 01.Apr.04 at 2:17 pm

Echo and the Bunnymen – All I Want.

Sheesh… How about this, if anyone is still looking…

When there are lines upon my face from a lifetime of smiles,
When the time comes to embrace for one long last while,
We can laugh about how time really flies.
We won’t say goodbye ’cause true love never dies.

  135. Carie 02.Apr.04 at 2:50 pm

    God that is beautiful. (tear)
However, I have no freakin idea what it is

  136. Dana 02.Apr.04 at 7:05 pm
