good times, good times

class ended with a whimper and then a bang. everyone was sorta humming when class started, nobody wanted to talk about writing or books, though they did spend a goodly amount of time talking about the highlander movie.

but then after it was all said and done, we headed out en masse to grumpy’s.

and you know, you really haven’t lived until you’ve seen the writing teacher you’ve had a crush on for the last 12 weeks do karaoke to rod stewart’s “you wear it well.” but even better than that, was having him relate the story of how he sang “i will dare” at punk karaoke at chubbys. i wanted to melt. plus it was his birthday. and it was a blast, hanging out with my writing compatriots.

and the best, best, best part?

we’re gonna start a writing group. right on.

Last evening had me rethinking whether or not I should take another class. I’m getting encouragement at home as well.

And you must give me the details of this writing group.

Ohhhhhhhhh yes, writing groups. Just promise yourself this, right now- if/when it doesn’t work out, you, Jodi, will not use it as an excuse not to keep writing.

Writing groups are tricky. We started one after my class this time last year and it lasted a round of emails and promises on our mothers’ graves that we’d “do this thing.” The end. Not one meeting.

Some people write, some people need company. That’s not to say yours won’t be the stellar Stephen-King-what’s-her-Joy-Luck-Club-writing-group-cum-jazz-combo-or-what-have-you, but you need to tell yourself you’ll do this for yourself regardless of what happens. At the end of the day, you are your own crutch; which is to say, you stand on your own two feet.
