to curb the rampant oberon-envy coursing through the sister club, i made a mix cd for the crew. submitted for your approval “Sister Mix, Vol. 1’s” track list:
jack and diane– john mellencamp, our mom’s name is diane. we all love this song.
my boyfriend’s back– chiffons, when we were kids, our dad used to sing this song all the time. i am not quite sure why.
we are family– sister sledge, duh.
little sister– rufus wainwright, i just like this song and am trying to expose my shaggy/barenakedlady/dixiechick loving sisters to something new.
my sister– the juliana hatfield three, “i hate my sister, she’s such a bitch. . . i love my sister, she’s the best.” it’s so fitting for sisterly relationships.
jodi– unwritten law, ok, there are about two songs that mention my name and sadly, i was too lazy to dig out the masters of reality cd with jody sings on it. ‘sides this one spells my name correctly.
erika kane– urge overkill, c’mon my dad named sister #2 after this soap opera character. how could i resist?
mambo #5– lou bega, “a little bit of ericka in my life” or by my side or some such stuff.
barenaked ladies– trouble with tracy, for sister #3.
cufflinks– tracy, she used to sing this song to us all the time when she was a senior in high school- bragging about the song with her name in it.
andre cymone– kelly’s eyes, heh. this song just cracks me up. some sample lyrics: “i’m sick and tired of this phone affair, i want to get into your underwear.”
michael jackson– ben, i love teasing sister #2’s husband that he was named after a rat. i also like to say, “ben? ben? where’s jerry? give me some ice cream or i’ll beat the crap out of you.” i also like to call him benjimima. i think i am so witty.
love seed mama jump– tony, it’s the only song i could find with sister #3’s husband’s name.
bonnie raitt– i can’t make you love me, when we lived in chippewa falls, wi, sister #3 taped this song off the radio. she was in 8th grade i think. whenever she had to do the dishes, she’d sing this song at the top of her lungs like her heart was breaking.
dixie chicks– if i fall, for my adorable, darling, jaycie.
tim mcgraw– don’t take the girl, i could have swore i wrote about how this song makes me dopey and sappy, but i’ll be damned if i can find the archive. anyway. . . dopey, sappiness runs in the family.
van morrison– brown eyed girl, 3 out of 4 have brown eyes. i am the hazel-eyed girl someone needs to write about.
dixie chicks, goodbye earl, another of jaycie.
uncle cracker, follow me, you haven’t lived until you’ve heard the sister club sing this song at the top of your longs. or, maybe that’s why you are still alive because you haven’t heard it. we shatter windows.
pearl jam– last kiss, we are all devout fans, for long, sad, complicated reasons i won’t get into. this is the one song nobody has on cd.
semisonic– closing time, every year for as long as i can remember my parents have hosted the big christmas family hoo-ha. since we can’t open christmas gifts until everyone leaves, we’d take to blinking the lights at like 9ish and saying. . . “you don’t have to go home, but you can’t stay here.” we are so funny.
This song is about a super hero named tony!!! it’s called tony’s theme!!!
tony’s theme by the pixies (off surfer rosa i think)
