the crowd at the Orpheum last night was totally into Belle & Sebastian, which was kind of cool to see. i felt like i had stumbled into some sort of secret, private party and i was waiting at any moment to be hauled out of there for being a poser. only i wasn’t posing because i made no pretense of being a belle & sebastian fan.
i have one belle & sebastian album that i bought about 94 years ago, and i don’t think i’ve listened to it in about 93 years. besides some song about Suki an art student (which i really, really dug) most of the music tonight was very pretty and well, it was pretty but not much else to me. the crowd totally dug it though and were clapping their hands off.
however, the little guy who is the leader of Belle & Sebastian (it’s actually a whole slug of people in the band and not just two people named belle and sebastian) is really entertaining. he was really quite funny, referencing the last time they’d played in minnesota with “so what have you been up to? anyone get married since then?”
but the best best best part of the show was the pregnant lady dancing behind me and ChiliD. she must have been about five or six months pregnant — you know pregnant enough to show but not so ungodly huge she was uncomfortable. anyway this little mom was dancing her feet off. she was one of those dancers who goes off so as to not be in the way and then just loses themselves in the music. she was oblivious to everyone and everything. she danced with her eyes clothes, arms going about, occassionally rubbing her belly. i couldn’t take my eyes off her. it was just beautiful to watch.
