Denis Johnson on writing and drugs

“There isn’t one, necessarily. I mean, you can take drugs without writing and you can write without taking drugs. Personally, I think it’s a miracle I was able to become a writer at all after everything I took when I was younger.” He paused. “I think what I’m saying is, don’t do drugs if you’re really serious about becoming a writer.” He paused again. “But don’t throw away the drugs you have in your pocket.”
from Paper Cuts.

I point this out only because I recently reread Johnson’s story “Working” and made Sister #2 take home Jesus’ Son to read on Saturday.

Couldn’t agree more, denis. I’m getting ‘Tree of Smoke’ on CD from the library tomorrow. I’ll let you know how it goes.

I have the audiobook too. I haven’t listened to it yet because the commute from the upstairs to the downstairs is just too short.
