An update

Dad’s still in the hospital, but he should be getting out today. At least I hope he’s getting out today. I haven’t talked to the fam yet so who knows? If he decides to grow up and take care of himself, he should be okay. His blood sugar was all fucked up and that made him incredibly sick. So sick that if he hadn’t gone to the hospital when he did, he wouldn’t be here today.

It’s frustrating because this is something he could have prevented if he just took a little bit better care of himself. And it’s scary because who knows if he has learned his lesson yet.

I was getting worried that something *bad* happened when you were quiet for so long. I’ll cross my fingers that he learned he lesson and takes better care from here on out …

My own father had diabetes and during one trip to his physician, the dr. told him he was in great shape. Of course the dr. meant he was in great shape for the condition he was in, but he took it to mean that he didn’t need to take his meds anymore or follow his diet. Surprise, surprise, a few months later he had a major heart attack. I went to see him in the hospital and he told me that he believed, no matter what he did (take or not take his meds), that when God wanted to take him he would. I told him that it may not matter to him but it was pretty selfish of him to not at least try to do everything he could so his family could enjoy his company. When he dies, he wouldn’t care anymore, but there was a wife and children who would suffer. For the first time in my life, I saw a tear in his eye. He left the hospital, went back on his meds and diet and lived 15 more years. Please let your dad know how much you need him.
