i blame ohio. kerry concedes, we’ve got the monkey in oval office for another four years, first ave is closed, and well, at least i have no new cavities (though i still have two that i need filled) and i am working from home.
i am so disillusioned. how on earth could he have won? what’s wrong with this country?

If you told me I could have all the toys I wanted and not have to pay for them I’d sign right up, too.
That’s what the neo-conservative agenda is all about. Not raising taxes to fund programs, not lowering program funding to lower taxes. Nope, they believe you can lower taxes AND raise funding levels.
‘course, when the day of reckoning arrives and you’ve gotta pay that credit card bill you’re gonna be pissed. Same thing with our national debt.
But, politicians don’t have to worry about that. They know they’ll be long gong when the bill comes due. And the electorate, who’s only real exposure to the political process is through the 5 second sound bites on the news, doesn’t have to critically think about what they are voting for.
It pisses me off a lot. But, at least they can’t blame the next four years on anyone but themselves. Hopefully in the mean time we’ll get some kind of more centrist party to expose the neo-conservative agenda for what it is.
bush made his bed, and i’m at least glad that he has to lie in it. the last four years have been a mess, and it’s impossible for any president to succeed in making things right. but now the man responsible for the mess is accountable for it.
check your local grassroots listings for al fraken’s MN senator bid and inklings of rodham-clinton/obama 2008.
As probably the only conservative willing to speak publicly here; The next four years will go on roughly the same as they would have had Kerry been elected. The same problems exist for Bush, the same things need to be done.
As far as an “agenda”; I think someone sees black helicopters where there are none. Since when has success been a stigma the rich have to be ashamed of? My entire family, myself included, has worked HARD to be in the upper tax brackets. We had no special help, we had no public assistance; We simply applied ourselves and kept at it.
There is no fantasy land where everyone wins on the merits of Society. You have to pursue happiness, not have it handed to you on a government issued silver platter.
Hey Thomas-
Fuck you.
Fuck you and all the other rich-ass motherfuckers like you.
You’re lucky your not here in person.
I’d kick your perfect teeth right through the back of your fucking skull.
Asshole.
wow jack, clearly you have some unresolved issues. you’re lucky you aren’t here right now, because i’d flick you super hard right in the ear and tell you to stop being such an intolerant prick. thomas has just as much right to be wrong as the rest of the political right.
It’s easy to be successful when you can go to a good school, have enough food, get to go to the doctor when you’re sick, have a safe place to live, et cetera. It’s much more difficult to be successful when some or all those components are missing. I don’t think it’s asking too much to expect that a just and merciful society would provide those things for all members of their society. I want my country to be a just and merciful society, and that’s what I’m going to work for.
i’m depressed, but if that’s what our country chooses, then we all get to roll along with it. the above post stating that bush has to work with what he’s set up is comforting. ffj, thanks for a positive outlook. thomas, i’m know you’ve worked hard, and you are a sincere guy, but i don’t know if you are happy, really. is anybody?
i’m reacting to this election as i would if i was going through a horrible grieving period. i’m in stage 4: depression right now.
FFJ, i was just thinking last night that after Obama’s big win, i wouldn’t be surprised to have him as our president someday. so even if he started out as hillary’s vp, not a bad thing at all. 🙂
Jack would be dissapointed. My teeth are far from perfect. Natalie would be sad too to find out that I suffered through the public school system as the youngest of 7. My dad lost his job when I was 6, and part of the reason I eat too much was that there never was enough food around. Dad took crappy jobs to make ends meet. Both my parents smoked constantly (Indiana had cheap cigs), and the only doctor visit I remember was when I was 11 and I busted my mouth wide open on an amusement park water ride, and then it was on the park’s dime. Our house was run down with lead paint everywhere. Yes, it’s much more difficult to be successful being raised like that, but we ALL did and not because some society provided those things to us. Hell, we were white; That meant we had a magic fucking pass, right? I never met any of the “Old Boys” to help me; I went to a bottom of the barrel state school because that was all I could afford. But I fucking worked it. You have to want it badly enough, then work to attain your goals. Me? I want my country to keep the terrorists out, allow me to vote and let me FIGHT for my American dream. Socialism is life, happiness and the pursuit of liberty.
My only consolation is that MN went to Kerry and the Twin Cities was overwhemingly againt Bush. I wouldn’t want to live in any of those red states anyway, I’ll take NYC over Oklahoma anyday.
It’s one thing to not want your tax money going to someone who can and should be working (assuming there are jobs to be had, of course). My issue is with the kids. As a society, we have an obligation to make sure that kids are taken care of.
There’s so much work and reforn that needs to be done with welfare and assistance programs. There’s got to be some way to balance the conservative, “My money! Mine!” with the liberal “Gimme all your money!” (I know that’s simplistic, but it seems to be the way each side views the other)
This may be a deviation from the discourse at hand, but did you know Ms. Calli is officially an ENGAGED person!?! As in engaged-TO-BE-MARRIED?!?
Conga-rats, Calli!
Thomas,
There is a mistaken belief that liberals want to have things given to them or don’t value hard work. That is not true. What we do want is a level playing field. With the income gap in this country widening and the disappearnce of the middle class, the rising number of uninsured and the increasing number of children growing up in poverty – there is more needed than just hard work. I grew up with very little, worked hard to finish school, got a good job and I hav a good life. That doesn’t make me feel that I am better than anybody else.
Once again, I’m speaking from personal, real life experience: I worked hard and am in the middle class. One of my brothers and one of my sisters have worked hard and are middle class as well. Two of my brothers worked VERY hard and are upper class. Then I have a brother who hasn’t worked very hard and is on the borderine of poverty. A “level playing-field” is a hand-out; There will always be adversity to overcome, why should you be exempt from it? Adversity forges a stronger person; The sword that is most likely to shatter is the sword untested. I’m GLAD I had to fight for what I have, not because it made me better than anyone else, but because it made me better than I would have been had the government stepped in and made it easy on me.
