i’ve been listening, but not really, to the decemberists’ odalisque for like a week. well, it’s been on and flowing through my ears but i haven’t really been paying attention.
today, i looked up what odalisque meant. what a cool word. i just love to say it over and over. i was under the vague assumption that an odalisque was like a hexagon or something. it sounds really like a shape and not a concubine.

A shapely concubine?
i wish!
The odalisque pose, we learned in art history, is the (usually naked) woman lying on her side, leaning on one elbow, facing you with breasts, stomach, groin and legs showing. You know, the pose of the ‘nekid’ woman painting over the bar in the Westerns. It’s a good position for reading when lying outside, but after awhile the arm holding up my head starts to fall asleep and I have to switch sides.
odalisque: A concubine or woman slave in a harem…
I need to start using this in business conversations…”Yes Mr. Smith, your idea allows the corporation to leverage its’ odalisque assets in order to penetrate hidden market shares!”
