Whenever I read things like this I feel sad, because I don’t have any friends that go back to my childhood. The closest I had was a friend I made in high school. I was an usher at his wedding (and he at mine), and after several years he just sort of drifted away. I talked to him on the phone almost a year ago, when I’d just bought this house and wanted to share the joy with someone who might have appreciated the struggle it took to get here, but he just seemed distant and uncaring.
Now, the person who’d count as my oldest friend is someone I’ve known for about three years.
There’s a world of difference between the things you can tell an old friend and the things you can tell a new friend.
