oh those small communities

shuffling into the apartment, shopping bag in hand, i met up with a fellow apartment-dweller. i hate this. i just like to avoid the people that i live near if at all possible, because i am shy.

so we meet in the lobby of the building and this wonderful exchange takes place:

“i see they still haven’t put a screen on your bedroom window,” she says.
“yeah, i know.”
“have you asked for one?”
“yeah, about 134 times.”
“you just gotta keep bugging them, that’s what i do.”
“yeah.”
“so, you must have a really good job to live here by yourself.”
“yeah, it’s pretty decent.”

then i bolted for my apartment. it just sorta creeps me out that she knows that much about me and i don’t think i’ve ever laid eyes on her before tonight.

well…on the one hand, it could be that she is telling you that she watches you through the window at night and she is struggling with two+ jobs to try and make ends meet and she still got an eviction for non-payment notice…or it could be that she is really desperate for someone to talk to because she is a really strange person who people run from…or she could be stalking you…or it could be that she was trying to be polite and was just as anxious to get away from you as you were from her…take your pick!

i do the same thing. there are only 10 other people living in my building and i only know the caretaker enough to talk to. it’s actually really sad. maybe i’ll organize a building party. yeah, right. that’ll happen when hell freezes over.
