the woman who walked into doors

in this post, paige talks about a bruise she got by falling down the stairs. it reminded me of a few summers back when i was babysitting jaycie. jaycie and i were doing the 10-second tidy ala “the big comfy couch” and she ran into my face. it hurt like hell. it looked like i had a black-eye. people in stores would give me “that look.” that look of pity like i was a victim. like i was in a bad relationship and my man beat the shit out of me. i just wanted to explain that my niece ran into my face. but then that just sounds like a cover up too. almost too ridiculous to be the truth. then, whenever i think about this i think about roddy doyle’s book the woman who walked into doors. it’s a really good book, you should probably read it.

I can’t remember what it was my aunt was doing, but she ended up accidentally getting hit in the forehead by a rubber mallet. At the emergency room the nurses kept asking her if she got hit often and wouldn’t believe her no matter how much she said it was an accident even when she started laughing. I guess it’s better than the opposite though.

I WOULD read that book if somebody would buy it for me. *ahem*

But that story reminds me of being beaned in the eye by a softball thrown by my adopted half-sister, when I was 8. Except it WAS intentional, but (at the time) I was humiliated to admit that I’d gotten a black eye from a girl. Nice to know that I’ve changed since then.
