here’s an interesting article from the pioneer press about perceptions of beauty in african-american and white women. african-american women tend to think they are beautiful and are generally satisfied with themselves. white women don’t think they are quite so beautiful and think they need to lose weight.

actually, that same comment was made on politically incorrect the other night (or maybe it was a while ago…i’m obsessed, so i never miss it). even though i’m a guy, i do notice that black women tend to be more confident about their bodies. well, there’s my two sense. hope your grammu is feeling better jodi!

Not to throw a fly in the ointment, but it occurs to me that the different perceptions of beauty in other cultures can help account for differences in self-perceptions of beauty.
In other words, if American women are inundated by images of what beauty has been culturally defined as, then they’re likely to compare themselves to that, especially if people around them help concretize those notions.
Of course, that could just be the psychologist in me speaking.
