i’ve got a question. does anyone know why Minnesotan’s are the only ones who play duck, duck grey duck? i am searching the web and can’t seem to find why we call it duck, duck, grey duck and not duck, duck goose like everyone else.

I too am a Minnesotan, I have noticed that Minnesotan’s are the only ones that say Duck Duck Grey Duck. However, a few of my friends from the twin cities area insist that I am crazy and say that they played duck duck goose. I don’t know if that hleps your quest, but I thought I would put my input in. By the way I am from the Mankato Area.
I was born in St. Paul and lived there for the first 7 years of my life. I learned how to play duck-duck-grey-duck. When I married, my wife (from New Jersey) ridiculed me about this upon discovering that I did not play duck duck goose like “the rest of the world”. One of my friends in grad school was also from the Twin Cities and my wife was flabbergasted to find that he also played “grey duck” – she asked him without my prodding, and he looked at her like she was crazy – of course he played grey duck. I was just relieved to find someone else who could corroborate my story, I wasn’t crazy!
here’s what i’ve found on the geography of grey duck: it is played in southern minnesota and eastern south dakota.
i grew up on the iron range, where we played duck duck goose. when i moved to rapid city (western) south dakota, kids played goose there too.
but kids in sioux falls (eastern) SD play grey duck. we rapid citians still use grey duck as a way to ridicule the east-river people.
I was born in Virginia, MN (on the Iron Range) and I asked another Ranger what he played. We both grew up playing duck, duck, grey duck, not duck, duck goose. So all the way up into northern MN also played this game. So I imagine most of us Minnesotans grew up playing the grey duck version!
I too am orginally from Duluth,MN. We played duck, duck, goose. I had asked my new neighbor who was from Minneapolis, MN. what she had played. It was duck, duck, grey duck. She in turn, in her waitressing job, had asked her customers and it started the whole town discussing this topic. The majority of the customers insisted that it was grey duck, but we people from Duluth, MN. think you all who believe that it is grey duck are funny.
I played duck, duck, grey duck and I’m not from Minnesota! I’m from Montana. However, nobody else around here seems to remember playing grey duck, they all played goose, so I’m imagining the teacher who taught it to me must have been from Minnesota.
