she sent me an e-mail at home.
she sent me an e-postcard at work.
she called me at the bowling alley.
she left a message for me at home on my voice mail.
she is sister #2. she’s very, very afraid i am going to forget to vote tomorrow. of course, i’d never forget. but i find her enthusiasm and excitement completely adorable. of course, she’s reminding me a bit of reese witherspoon in ‘election.’ but it’s still cute.
i take a lot of credit for sister #2’s political awareness. she was an impressionable 17 year old when we lived together in chippewa falls, wisconsin back in 1992. it was just the two of us in that apartment. mom and dad had moved back to minnesota. i stayed in chippewa falls so ericka could finish high school. i had also just declared a second major– political science. we talked about it endlessly. i taught her everything she knows and she loves it now. thrives on politics. it’s so damn cute. i am proud.
it dumbfounds my parents. my dad has never voted in his entire life, and he’s quite proud of it. mom didn’t start voting until i nagged her into, back in 1992. ericka’s also manged to get sisters #3 and #4 to rock their vote. i am impressed.
she’s already started educating her daughter. jaycie, who is all of three, can point out jesse “the guv” ventura when he comes on the tv. of course she looks at his bald dome spewing forth on the tv, sticks out her tongue and says, “icky jesse.” i am so proud.
so, tomorrow is election day. go out, rock your vote. i hear people in their 20s whine and moan because the politicians don’t address issues that are important to them. . . duh? of course they don’t, because you don’t vote. you gotta vote. it’s a freedom we so take for granted. this country’s apathy breaks my heart. i know it’s considered hip and cool to be apathetic. to not care. but i think it’s just lame. i think it’s lazy. i think it’s a damn shame. i am ashamed of my generation.
so, you don’t know who to vote for. you don’t know where the candiates stand, you don’t even know the issues. that’s no excuse. thanks to this, handy, dandy tool you can find out who to vote for. you don’t have to know the issues. you don’t have to know the candidates. you just need to have an opinion. you take this little survey, you find out which candidate most closely matches your ideas, you go vote, you go make difference.
i’ll be voting tomorrow, i can’t wait. election day is like a holiday to me. wahoo!
