I’ve probably listened to the song “Kiss on My List” by Hall & Oates about 6,116 times in my life. Hall & Oates were very big when I was in elementary school. I’m sure I’ve spent at least 6 hours of my life roller skating to “Private Eyes.” At least.

For sure I have listened to “Kiss on My List” at least 36 times this year, because I need to listen to it once a day or else the earth will spin off its axis and be burned up by the sun. I get like this sometimes. Where I have to hear a song all the time because it scratches some sonic itch I have in my brain. The last time I remember it happening was Heart’s “Magic Man.”.

“Kiss on My List” shuffled up when I cranked open Angrboda to write about a totally different topic. As I shoulder shimmied through the song I thought about tweeting about my recent penchant for it and why I thought that was.

My reason? Because the line “If you insist on blowing my bliss, I’ll tell you this. . .” It’s a great line, plus the consonance & alliteration make it super fun to sing. As I was preparing my snooty falooty yet keen observation, my eye caught the lyrics posted with this YouTube video.

“Haha, dumbass,” I said to myself, full of righteousness. “You fucked up the best line in the song.” So I turned to knower of all the things, google. They were on Team Dumbass. I wavered the tiniest bit but reassured myself there was no way I’ve been singing this song wrong for the last forty-one years.

Why I believed so strongly in myself on this one, I’m not sure. I’ve been singing songs wrong based on what I think the lyrics should be for all of the time I’ve been singing songs. Somehow I thought those 6,116 times meant something. They meant nothing. I went right to the horse’s mouth, and it’s very clear he’s singing “if you insist on knowing my bliss.”

What a disappointment. It’s still an excellent song, but my version with the blowing of the bliss is at least 17% more excellent. I mean the blowing/bliss thing was right there, Also, it’s more interesting if the friends & the kisser on the list are more interested in blowing bliss than in knowing the bliss, right? One is a gossipy fun fact and the other is a nefarious plan to ruin someone’s happiness. COME ON!

Blissfully yours forever,
Jodi

P.S. I almost titled this one “I Insist on Blowing My Own Bliss” but I thought that sounded too much like masturbation (which I call practice already) and I didn’t want everyone I know to die of embarrassment or TMI or whatever because I was writing explicitly about masturbation.

I’ve been parked in front of Jed, my laptop, all morning applying for a job. I wish I could say jobs, but that would be a lie. It took me many hours to prepare a resume and cover letter for just one single job. There was a small break for Ellen and a brief interlude to talk on the phone with Jayto, my former boss, but that’s about it.

I consistently forget how much work it is to find work. And I’ve only begun the applications for the day. This is the most work I’ve done in weeks since I finished the last freelance gig.

So anyway, my point is that I was sort of riding a buzz for getting the cover letter and resume sent. I was checking e-mail and mentally high-fiving myself when I could feel my buzz slowly creep away and the big cloud of doom descend.

“Wait!” I said to Myself. “You can’t get bummed out, the send button is still warm.”
“But, but. . .” Myself said to me. “I’m feeling the mojo slip away.”
“Hrmph!” I said to Myself.
“Wah!” Myself said.

As my inner-voices pouted I finally paid attention to the noise filling my ears, coming from the headphones over them. It was Neil Young’s “Harvest Moon.” Duh.

I made a heroic leap, well if you can make a heroic leap with only your arm, for Eurydice the iPod. Before one more note of Neil Young’s depressing music could fill my ears, I pressed that skip button with everything I had. Then I pressed it some more and more and more because it’s obvious to me that Eurydice is playing the role of Buzzkill Jones today and serving up more woe is me than I need right now. Eventually I landed on “Maneater” by Hall & Oates. I don’t think they know how to kill a buzz.

Bananas, the fruit. I can’t get enough of them and whenever I eat them I think of the main character in The Hotel New Hampshire whose name I cannot remember who eats bananas and runs all the damn time because he wants to be a good wrestler. He does this because the grandpa tells him something like, “You have to get obsessed and stay obsessed.”

Top Chef, like Project Runway but with knives

Polly & Peabo

Dan Chaon & Jean Thompson, because every non-short story book I’ve picked up lately has annoyed the shit out of me. But Chaon’s Fitting Ends and Thompson’s Throws Like a Girl are magical elixirs for what ails you when it comes to novel malaise.

That damn Jeff Tweedy bootleg that I haven’t stopped listening to since, oh, Saturday. An intervention might be in order. Currently I am rocking the “Who Were You Thinking Of?”

The random curly-haired, bespectacled boy my imagination created last night during practice.

Driving home from Grumpy’s full of beer and tator tots with the windows down singing along to the Oldie’s station, especially when they play Hall & Oates’ “Maneater” which seemed like a gift from the radio gods to me and Ruby.

Our Taste Tests during lunchclub, earlier this week we did Toll-House Chocolate Chip Break and Bake Cookies vs. Ma. Buehler’s Break and Bake Chocolate Chip Cookies (some store brand). Toll-House won, unanimously. Today we are taste testing salsa.
