I’ve never really been personally invested in what book Oprah picks for her bookclub. Now I am. Not just because she picked a short story collection (yay!) but that she picked Uwem Akpan’s Say You’re One of Them
As some of you may recall, I had the honor of meeting Uwem and hanging out with him for a night last spring. I have to say the attention and praise soon to be heaped on him is well deserved. And, really, it’s thanks to him that I wrote that second-person ghost story that I love so much.

There is something magical about the man. It is so funny, I have kept pushing the book on friends, but no one really wanted to read it. I kept saying, “The stories are haunting. You won’t be able to shake them.” No one borrowed the book, but now they’ll come running. Uwem is truly a bleseed man. I can’t wait to see him on Oprah.
