Even he doesn’t know it. I remember watching REM unplugged back in college. They came to that song and Michael pulled out a sheet of paper from his pocket, unfolded it, and sat it on his lap. He looked up and said, “I couldn’t remember the words, so I had to look them up on the internet.”

Then, instead of singing “Jellybean, boom”, he sang “Jellybean, (static-sounding unspellable noise)”.

at one point in time i did in fact have it memorized. it took the entire 3.5 hour drive up to school the first time my first year of college. it involved lots of rewinding on a pink boom box because my car stereo had just been stolen. i think i had it down by the time i passed the meat place in macon, which means nothing to anyone reading this i’m sure.

also, anyone who doesn’t know the words to a classic like “bastard” really just is not rawknroll at all.

I just sing along and mumble the parts I don’t know… just like Michael Stipe!
