the TTHM is in the midst of putting together the soundtrack of his life, no more than 20 songs that mean the most to him or are most moving. of course, since i am a copycatter of the worst kind i want to do the same thing. but i’m having a bit of trouble.
i mean, where do you start on such a list? do you start with your very favorite first song? the one that when it reached #1 on the solid gold weekly countdown you actually wept, because you thought that was some sort of honor?
do you start with the first song that actually meant something to you? a song that you liked because it spoke to you and wasn’t just fun to sing along?
where do you start? what would be on the soundtrack of your life?

Top 10 in TEN minutes while working a switch board……………
I have still not heard my one or two!
A melancholy celtic tune. Preferably played in a dense glade with the sun streaming through rising the steam off the dewy moss.
I’ve done that, and I chose the song that best sums up my life as an intro; that seemed to do a good job of establishing the theme of the rest of the compilation – gave me ideas on which songs should be arranged in what order, etc.
Good luck; this is a fun exercise.
Actually, I started with the song I sang a capella to my third grade class when our rather impertinent nun ordered me to. The song was one of the only two my 8 year old brain knew by heart: All My Loving by Lennon and McCartney. Needless to say, we were all aghast.
I’ll pretend that I’m missing
these lips I’ve been kissing and
hope that my dreams will come true.
And then while I’m away I’ll write home
everyday and I’ll send all my loving
to you.
In retrospect, perhaps I should have chosen the other one: Let’s Spend the Night Together by Jagger/Richards.
I feel something strong that I can’t describe, oh my. But I just can’t apologize, oh no…
American Pie -Don McLean -My first favorite song.. at about age 4 or 5 I suppose.
Wildfire -Michael Martin Murphey -the first song I was passionate about. Age 7
Another One Bites the Dust -Queen -Next favorite song. About age 10 now.
Stone in Love -Journey -The way I spent my teens.
The Best of Times -Styx -“our song”. I wonder where she is and what she’s doing now. Wow. I didn’t know that would still hurt.
Wild Boys -Duran Duran -The song that broke me from my hessian habits.
Subdivisions
War Paint
Middletown dreams
The Pass
-all Rush -Restless teenage years.
Don’t you forget about me -Simple Minds -Everybody went through a Breakfast club phase
Fresh Aire -Mannheim Steamroller -Just georgeous music.
She’s like the wind -Patrick Swayze -Hey shut up! This girl was a heartbreaker.
Sister Christian -Night Ranger -Mostly background music but it was everywhere back then.
Heavy Metal (Takin’ a ride) -Don Felder -Angry young man, driving too fast.
Deadbeat Club -B-52’s -The last album of the 80’s
Last Plane Out -Toy Matinee -Burgeoning liberal tendencies with a fat bass line.
Tea for One Again -Kevin Gilbert -a lonely decade.
Walking in Memphis -Marc Cohn -Rediscovering life.
Stuck in the Middle with you -Stealers Wheel -And it all comes down to politics.
Oddly enough, the longer I thought about this, the more one song kept coming to mind.
Are you ready for this?
“Waiting for Somebody” – St. Paul. I spent most of my teen/young adult years waiting for my knight in shining armor to come around and writng dreadful poetry about him. Shame I didn’t hear it until after he had left my life. Originally I would have said “Waiting On A Friend” by the Stones, but Westerberg has better lyrics.
Of course, number two would be “I Believe” by R.E.M. because I believe in coyotes and time as an abstract. *grin*
After that I have no idea – but that might be an interesting project for this weekend.
I’ve been working on my soundtrack for the last three years. It’s up to 200 songs. I’m hopeless.
Quadrophenia by The Who. The original double album….
As an army jacketed, hair always in my eyes teenage boy addled by cheap speed, angst, cigarettes and perpetual heartbreak it was just too perfect. And it sounds better on rainy days.

I’ve been reading your diary for so long now I can’t remember how long except to say I found you while trying to tell someone how f’n cool Paul Westerberg is by showing them his lyrics and your site came up. The only song on the soundtrack of my life would be “Achin’ to Be” and I know you know just who did that song. I dig your site, I especially like..well I like everything about it. But a fellow Paul lover is hard not to find interest in eh? I linked my biggest entry about Paul above. I know this other girl online that interviewed him….if you’re interested in knowing about her….
