riddle me this darling ones, what in the hell is the difference between vanilla and new york vanilla?
i heard the same commercial on the radio about 384 times this morning talking about some sale on ice cream where you can get a gallon of vanilla or new york vanilla for like 48 cents or something. so really, what’s the difference?

I have never heard of New York Vanilla. And I live here.
i think vanilla and french vanilla tend to be sweeter ice cream and made with a thinner batter, where as new york vanilla starts with a thicker, less sweet batter. more like a custard with eggs.
For 48 cents a gallon, I don’t care what kind of ice cream it is. 🙂
ok, i might have made that 48 cents thing up
when my sister was little, she called all vanilla ice cream “new york ice cream”
new york vanilla is always more yellowish and richer than regular vanilla. i think paul could be onto something with the eggs thing.
so now there are four types of vanilla?!
i’ve never even heard of NY vanilla
vanilla, french vanilla and new york vanilla… which is the fourth?
The fourth is Vanilla Bean, where there’s little dark bits of the bean in the ice cream. The bits look like coffee grounds, but have a much smoother texture. Dryers brand makes the definitive example… imho.
here in ny (where, incidenally, i have never heard of “ny vanilla”), we have three kinds of vanilla. vanilla, french vanilla, and philadelphia vanilla. the difference i thought was that philadelphia vanilla is mostly white and has bitty vanilla bean black specks (yum) while regular vanilla is just, ya know, regular and french vanilla is yellowish.
i like philadelphia vanilla best. has anyone else ever heard of it?
I’ve never heard of philadelphia vanilla or new york vanilla and I live in NY and grew up in Philly. weird. I gotta eat more ice cream.
i grew up eating new york vanilla, Kemps sells it – they service the midwest and the southern u.s., but not the coasts or new york. i live in california now and would love to find another company that sells it – know of any?
