twirly girly

when i was a young girl one of my all-time favorite past times was twirling. i’m sure all kids did it.

there was no twirling in the house. i got yelled at plenty for attempting it. but outside i could twirl to my heart’s content. i’d just fling my arms out and spin around. spinning, spinning, spinning until the grass became a round green carpet and the earth tilted sideways to greet me. then i’d lay on my back in the grass watching the sky spin around and around.

i thought for sure i was making the entire planet spin faster. then, when the earth stopped, i’d get up and do it again. i loved to twirl. my spinning body giving me such great joy.

eventually, i stopped twirling. i’m not sure why. maybe i got too old to believe i could make the earth spin. maybe the earth stopped tilting on its side to cushion my fall.

tonight i’m watching figure skating and it’s making me cry. big, fat tears slide down my face as i watch those girls twirl and twirl and twirl. their bodies seem so joyful and my envy of their twirling, joyful bodies makes me sad.

You should twirl again! It was a few month back, I guess… I don’t know what possessed me. Probably something along the lines of missing that youthful freedom. But I twirled!

I twirled until I was dizzy and sick to my stomach and giggling like an 8 yr old. It was great! Hmm… maybe when my foot feels better (I have an ouchie) I will twirl again! 🙂

Since I was a boy, and didn’t wear dresses fit for twirling – my brother and I rolled down hills. It was great: dangerous and risky. I hadn’t thought about it in years until we took my son to a park that had a great rolling rill, covered in long soft grass. Not only did I get to roll down the hill, but I got to teach my toddler how to roll too!
