Do you have any idea how hard it is to finish a short story when you can’t seem to stay awake for more than four hours in a row? Probably not. My brain is so full of snot I’ve decided that the second person might be a good idea (and I hate the second person) and so is watching Titanic (I love Kate Winslet and would switch teams in a heartbeat if she asked me to).
So yeah, the second person. Can you believe that? I generally hate the second person but think that maybe it would be a good idea to push beyond my comfort zone. Also, I’m only 1400 words into the story so it wouldn’t be a huge shift. Besides, I’ll probably only keep 400 of those words anyway, right?
I’ve been flirting with the idea of trying to second person since that night I spent hanging out with Uwem Akpan. He encouraged me to try it if I never had, just because. Plus, last week in class we had a story that was second person that didn’t drive me nuts at all. That might be because while the author wrote you, she named the ‘you’ Annie and because the writing was very good.
I don’t know though man, the second person? I’m a little worried. It doesn’t help at all that I really like the character, September, and worry that by making it second person I’m giving her the shaft. Poor September has been a supporting character in a few of the stories and now it’s supposed to be her time to shine.
