Some thoughts for this Saturday

  • Getting up after 11, even though you stayed up after 3 reading The Learners is a good way to ruin the day. You spend the whole day in some sort of funk-like malaise with no drive to do anything but sit in your La-Z-Grrl and watch “The Big Chill” which you’d never seen before this afternoon.
  • I have absolutely no idea why I wrote that entire bullet in the second person. Perhaps my subconscious doesn’t want to admit that the most ambitious thing I did today was watch “The Big Chill.” The movie is not eight hours long, so I am not sure what happened to the rest of the day.
  • So yeah, “The Big Chill.” Hrm, I didn’t get it. It seemed like a bunch of 30something, mid-80s ennui bullshit. I watched it because I happened to catch part of High Fidelity the other day and there’s that line where “Can’t Always Get What You Want” by The Stones is disqualified because of it’s use in “The Big Chill.”
  • One thing I did learn is that I find Kevin Kline attractive. This is news to me, and why I have the movie “French Kiss” on right now. Also, I am not sure if there is anything cuter on the planet than Meg Ryan in the mid-to-late nineties.

French Kiss and The Big Chill are two of my favorite movies, although as I have grown to hate Glenn Close more and more I’ve lost some of my love for the latter.

Also, Kevin Kline is quite a good-looking fellow. He may be even cuter than Meg in that movie.

Why do you like The Big Chill?

An interesting question, and I actually have an answer.

I saw it at the theater with my mom, in Phoenix, the summer after she and my dad had gotten divorced and she moved away. On the way home from the movie “I Heard It Through The Grapevine” came on the radio and we cranked it up and sang along as loud as we could. The windows were open, the heat was blasting in like a furnace, and I was about as happy as I have ever been.
