Firefox and Elizabeth Wakefield bridge the generation gap

Last week, Sister #2 sent the sisterclub an e-mail telling us how she had to buy Jaycie her first stick of deoderant and that after they left Target they went to the library where Jaycie checked out the first Sweet Valley Twins book.

While the rest of the stinkies e-mailed back and forth about inheriting Dad’s stinky pits (apparently a benefit of being the 1/2 sister), I revelled in the fact that Jaycie was blossoming into a Sweet Valley girl. I was a total Sweet Valley girl!

Ever since the e-mail, I’ve been giddy with the idea that finally my princess-loving, glamor-desiring only niece and I will have something in common.

It is no secret that Jaycie perfers pretty, put-together Sister #3 over everyone else in the family. Just like it’s no secret that Cade loves his ‘Auntie’ which is what he calls Sister #2, and Max and Nolie love me best of all (Liam is still too young to choose a favorite, though Sister #4 is praying it’s her).

Jaycie and I have always had an odd relationship. I love to tease her, and she hates to be teased. But this past weekend we found even more common ground.

As we were driving back from Belle Plain, Max listened to Ben Folds’ “Lost in the Supermarket” about 139 times, and Jaycie babbled endlessly about Hannah Montanna, batoning, Miranda and the mean looks she gives, the new Dixie Chicks CD, how she’s gonna take Swimming 2 this summer and play soccer, and her internet surfing habits.

“I just like Firefox so much better,” she said.
“What?” I asked.
“I like Firefox, instead of Internet Explorer.”
“You know what Firefox is?”
“Yes, it’s what’s I use to visit the disney channel dot com. I had install Flash, but after that I really liked it.”
“You’re like the coolest 8-year-old ever,” I said.
“Max still uses the blue internet,” she said.
“Max is a nerd,” I said.
“NO I’M NOT!” he shouted from the backseat.
“Max you lectured us last night about your favorite mythical creatures,” i said. “That’s nerdy.”
“Okay, that’s kind of nerdy,” he said. “I just can’t help it that I like dragons and leprechauns and . . . ”

Jaycie and I just looked at each other over our sunglasses and grinned.

I just loved the Sweet Valley High books. I’m not sure what number I eventually stopped at. It would be fun to revisit them again.

Did you explain that Ben Folds’ “Lost in the Supermarket” is actually a cover of a Clash song? Both artists are excellent either way and it’s a great song =)
