Paul Westerberg, Pantages Theatre, November 6, 2004

it’s hard to write about a show that happened two days ago, especially when you have another show stuck in between the one you want to write about and the one that’s forefront in your mind.

even though the band came out satuday night and tore through a song called “Dust My Broom” (some old blues song i had never, ever hear of) which was different than the friday show, the immediately launched into the first three or four songs they played the night before. i was starting to worry a bit, thinking that they were just gonna do the same show from the previous night.

but paul, he did not let me down. of course, i don’t remember setlists or song orders, because i refuse to scratch them down while i’m into the rock and the roll.

they banged through I.O.U off of “Please to Meet Me” and i thought the roof was gonna blow. the crowd was so into this show, on their feet for most of it (which i loved because the minnesota nice thing about sitting vs. standing is just more than i can handle).

when paul broke into “born for me” i actually gasped out loud and covered my mouth, causing the guy next to me to look over to make sure i wasn’t having a heartattack or a stroke or something. i honestly had to blink back tears and i so wished the TTHM had been at the saturday show, just to see that.

they did “Waitress in the Sky” and at one point Paul told the crowd to take it, and we all sung our lungs out. it gives me the shivers just thinking about it.

he also did “Things” and “First Glimmer.”

it was just fucking amazing and that sounds so lame, but i am not a music writer and there’s no way i can find the words to express what happened in that theatre that night.

I completely get it. I just spent the last two Fridays at R.E.M. shows and while they were easily the best things that happened to me since last year’s shows, there’s just no way to decribe the yummy goodness that is an R.E.M. show.
