where i fumble for words

my co-worker who lost her baby after carrying for five months, was back at work today. we had a meeting where she laughed with the rest of us. as we were standing in the hall afterwards, she leaned over to me and jess and said quietly, “thank you for the flowers.”
“you’re welcome,” i said.
“i really appreciated it, they were beautiful. the most beautiful ones i got.”
“i’m really sorry,” i said. “it’s good to see you.”
“thank you,” she said. i must have had that i want to hug you look on my face or something, because then she said, “it’s ok, i won’t break. but if you touch me, i’ll probably cry.”
“we don’t want that i said. because if you start, i’ll start and the last thing we need here is a bawling copywriter.”

then she just smiled at me with big watery eyes.

and still, all i want to do is cry.
