Conan needs to hire me to select bands for his talk show. I would not pick Alt-J. Ever.

When I woke up this morning to six inches of snow & a manhunt in Boston I made the executive decision to avoid as much “news” as possible. I get an A+ for avoidance. To maintain my grade I finally caved and purchased “Grace of My Heart” which is easily on my Top 10 list of all-time favorite movies (along with “High Fidelity,” “Almost Famous,” “Before Sunset,” and “Shakespeare in Love”).

I used to have this bad girl on the old DVR so I could watch it whenever the mood struck me, but haven’t seen it since I got rid of cable two years ago. Tonight, I finally got around to remedying that nonsense.

“The dress fits the occasion. It’s you that doesn’t fit,” Edna’s mother to Edna.

“Lady singers they just don’t sell,” record executive.

Illeana Douglas: her eyes, her hands, her allover lovely awkwardness.

Eric Stoltz as a delectable red-headed, turtlenecked beatnik Howard Cazsatt.

“Why do you save your best songs for girls? I told you I can’t sell girl singers.”

Bridget Fonda as the closeted 60s pop singer.

The friendship between Edna/Denise and Cheryl and how they kind of mock the manly men assholes in the music industry.

The older, married writer & that whole thing. That whole thing!

“How are The Beatles going to put us out of a job?”

Oh yeah, that Brill Building mystique.

Matt Dillon.

Matt Dillon.

Matt Dillon.

Matt Dillon as a sort of Brian Wilson/Kurt Cobain troubled musical genius.

When Edna/Denise sings “God Give Me Faith.” That song wrecks me, and when The Outlaw broke up with me 1000 years ago I listened to the song for about 6 days in a row. The homophone line: “This belle is wrung out” or “This bell is rung out” is just divine. Nice work Elvis Costello & Burt Bacharach. Also her Edna’s hair in this scene is some of my favorite kind of hair.

Matt Dillon in glasses.

“What’s it going to take for me, to get you to see your spark?”

The actual band Redd Kross as the fake Beach Boysesque band The Riptides.

“Denise, the only I wish for you, and I really sincerely mean this, is that you are fired. And I mean that for your own good. You are doing yourself a disservice.”

Matt Dillon in glasses and a beard.

“It would be so much better than what we guys are doing, so much more genuine, personal.”

“You look like a vampire. All that fresh air and health food will kill you.”

Joel’s tough love talk next to the motel pool.

The final scene of her at the piano.

About a week ago someone at The Nerdery tweeted about Turntable.fm, and ever since then I’ve been a little bit on the obsessed side of newfound love. It helps that the very same day it was tweeted was intern Tuesday here at Supergenius HQ. The interns (Jaycie and Max) and I had a big ball of fun playing music, laming music, and generally annoying each other with our selections. Max is partial to 6-minute songs by Dead Maus which make my ears bleed. Jaycie is partial to Lady Gaga which just makes me want to listen to Madonna. Oh, and Justin Bieber but that’s more to bug her brother than anything else. I for one think that one song is adorable and catchy as hell. Viva La Biebs!

Max made our room, Minnesota Reads Official (don’t be fooled by imitators, you know if there were any). You can usually find us there every Tuesday arguing over who has crappier taste in music.

However, today I discovered another perfectly awesome use for Turntable: themed playlists! For reasons I cannot explain I decided today that I should listen to songs that are like short stories (perhaps my brain is priming itself for short-story writing class which starts tomorrow). As I was in the midst of y’arring a bunch of MP3s of songs I didn’t have it struck me to do a little turntable searching and there were all the songs I didn’t have. Brilliant!

So fun. You should give it Turntable.fm a try.

I’ve seen it blogged about, tweeted around, and now it’s inescapable as I watch the “CBS Morning News” or whatever this news crap is called on CBS in the morning before Ellen. Every other commercial has been all about Oprah’s Favorite Things. Op’s Favorite thing ever. Oprah!

I’m not an Oprah person. I know she has her acolytes and her haters. I’m neither. I’m apathetic when it comes to Op and her minions. Frankly, I think there’s more important pop cultural type things to hate. For instance, that fucking Toyota commercial with the snotty, entitled, privileged little prick who is picky about the car his parents’ drive, the music they listen to, and their ability to use the GPS properly. Whenever I see this commercial I want to punch every ad person who worked on it right in the face. Listen jerkys, entitled little shits (no matter how cute) aren’t funny.

Woah. I really needed to get that off my chest. But this isn’t about the commercials I hate or my weird compulsion to watch commercials. No, this about Oprah’s Favorite Things. Wait, no, it’s about my favorite things.

Yes, Jodi’s Favorite Things November 2010. If you were sitting in the live studio audience here at Supergenius HQ here’s a few of the things you could expect to get:

A comfy pair of pajama pants

Fables Volumes 1 -12

A toasted multi-grain bagel with Skippy Natural Creamy Peanut butter and a sliced Honey Crisp Apple

Re-runs of A Different World & Roseanne on the TV

A set of Corningware Cornflower Casserole dishes (my latest obsession. Clearly I will not rest until everything in my kitchen is 40 years old)

A Kleen Kanteen

Swedish Landscape Quilt

Sure there’s no cashmere or trips or electronics, but I can attest to the awesomeness of all of it.
