where did my ass go?

i am brain dead. i worked my ass off this week. which always seems so weird to say because working my ass off usually means i spend a lot of time in front of a computer stringing words together.

what i do for a living isn’t very respected by most everyone outside of say; maria, jess, julie, and sonja. such is life. i’m not considered a writer by “real” writers and my blue-collar family doesn’t think that what i do is really work. because, you know, i like to write.

but i do work, and sometimes it’s really quite hard. it’s my job to sit in meetings and listen to the ideas fly by at the speed of sound and then take all those ideas from all those people and put them into words. words that are compelling enough to get people to spend their money on our stuff.

it’s not easy at all.

but it’s getting better. i’ve had my fair share of problems at work. a bossman who doesn’t unerstand what i do, a coworker who wouldn’t pull her share of the weight, untalented hacks, office politics, you name it.

but it’s getting better. in january i got a new bossboss and she fucking rules. it’s so amazing to work for someone who empowers you to do what you want, who actually believes that you know what you’re doing, that you have a brain and encourages you to use it.

it’s been over a year since i had a boss who cared about what i do. sandy was one of the greatest bosses i ever had. she was fun and she for while she cared and was passionate– she always made me feel appreciated. but then she got bogged down in politics, her powerlessness, and bad juju and, well, things went downhill.

this new bossboss is amazing. it’s just so damn nice– and i haven’t talked enough about how wonderful it is to be excited again. wwell, i would be excited if i had time. once things settle down to there normal chaos it’s gonna be pretty amazing.

I would love to have your job. I used to work in advertising (first in account services then in media) and it became abundantly clear to me that while I have a degree in English and can write, I’d never get into the creative department because–at least at the second agency I was at–they wanted the writers to actually have degrees in advertising or marketing. Sigh.

my degree is in journalism and political science. i was lucky, they just wanted someone who could write. also, i started out in customer service, so when the job opened up i had knowledge of the software and the company. . . it’s pretty hard from someone in fresh to beat that.
